I don't know anyone and don't speak the language but know the basics from a phrase book.
I have a few people who are English only speakers who have come back and said you'll be totally fine with the basics if you have your shyt planned out.
I will be meeting a Japanese speaking friend (probably) in Tokyo, so I will see how it goes with them
I will be in Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto, Kobe, Hiroshima, Nara, Miyajima and a few other places. It's going to be me totally out of the comfort zone
