In a strange way everyone could use a hypothetical stint in prison.

Because what are you focused on while you're in there. Nothing but yourself. You don't have work distractions, people distractions, mass media distractions. So if you're motivated and inspired, you can make yourself a better person. You can't just "take 5 years off" if you're living a normal life.

This thread is the one for me, but having ideas = very different than putting it in practice.

1. Instrument 2. Cooking 3. Language

I'm set with language, knowing enough Spanish and Portuguese. Education... not very good. Getting a bachelor's but not in anything special that can get my foot in the door, puts me at an instant disadvantage. Plenty of lazy years and wasted potential. Already knowledgeable about plenty of random things (a lot of reading and exposure to things growing up), can carry conservations if I can be bothered, people generally like me (not that that's what this is about, but still). Generally lacking both in accomplishments and intangibles, rate myself a 3/10 right now. Random twists along with focus and seizing opportunities could've seen me graduated from an Ivy at a prestigious job right now, but that's the way it goes.

I'm always looking out for things to expand my mind. I hate the traditional literature/philosophy route people go to seem cultured. I prefer things like the Freakonomics podcast for example, learn a lot aobut random subjects. Or a podcast like the Joe Rogan Experience, sometimes I wonder how he got so wise and how he finds/found time to learn about so many random subjects. For example, I'd consider someone like Joe Rogan a modern renaissance man. Comedian, commentator, a bit of a drug legend, extremely smart, jiu-jitsu black belt, etc.

I do hate people who come in and turn into something that's not "them" however. Being young-ish in NYC I see this so often. Instant food experts, instant culture experts, no you can't read the NY Times arts section and then be looked upon as someone cultured. As artificial and creepy as it gets. Generally trying too hard, but what do I know, maybe they've fooled themselves into liking it and don't find anything strange about it.

let me ask you this how was the transition from Spanish to portuguese?

Up. Man...

I'm self employed, been killing it with work and working on MYSELF. I read The Little Prince and The Alchemist (:wow:). They changed my life, especially The Alchemist. I'm also working to get my money right and work toward financial independence, which I think is the cornerstone of this whole movement. I'm bouncing between reading Think and Grow Rich, The Prophet, The Richest Man in Babylon and Eleven Rings (Phil Jackson's book) and will be done with all soon.

I've also started Yoga and meditating and I can't tell you how much it's helped my focus, confidence, energy and sex. I got a crazy amount of goals I'm working toward, including writing a book, so I'll need focus and energy moving forward.

I realize that rather than chasing material or societal pats on the back, life is all about improving yourself from the INSIDE out, and the accolades and success will follow. A quote I came across sums that up:

"What you become in the process is far more important than the dream."

:wow:

it crazy discovering you have interests similar to my own. one thing i need to do personally is cop the alchemist (you are the third person to mention this book). I find the Richest Man In Babylon and Khalil Gibran The prophet are dope reads.

Me myself been reading alot of Jiddu Krishnamurti Books and Taoist Texts. One thing i suggest for the brehs in here are Mantak Chia books (check amazon.com and you'll see what im referring to)

great thread. Yall should've known that i was going to post in here. Im currently trying to perfect spanish and i was wondering if those who have master spanish and portugese or speak spanish or portugese fluently, find the transition to be smooth?

need some pointers on this

They not about that life though.....

That's why I love building with like minded people. Steel sharpens steel and we might be able to learn something we otherwise wouldn't have. For instance, I've had a passing interest in Taoism but haven't dug deep yet. I'll check out Mantak Chia's stuff. What drew you to Taoism?

Believe it or not Kung Fu movies. I remember I believe it was a movie called Tai Chi Master with Jet Li that actually broke down the principles in a concise form that first spark my interest. From there i made purchases of the books I Ching ( i think Alfred Huang translation is best although that could be a matter of opinion) and Tao te Ching (black & white cover) to even purchasing the Book Of Five Rings.

I'm about to :eat: at the library. I do a lot of digital downloads, but it gets tiring working from the computer all day and then also reading from it. Thanks breh.

Well I feel like I could add some things to this thread but I'll just choose one..

I would like more brothers to learn how and to play Chess.

I know, "Its boring" and it just a game but its a thinking game and playing chess really helped me become a more patient person and taught me how to always think 2-3 steps ahead and to consider the outcome of my actions.

I love the game but I only have like 2-3 friends that play, whenever I try to put some brothers on to it they just :heh: and act like they too "cool" to play...

Offering to teach a female how to play chess is a lowkey ace in the hole too. Most of them don't know how to play and are intrigued by a brother that plays chess so its usually a win-win.

Just a thought :manny:

most people dont like the complexity of the game. Chess can span from the Fool's mate, which is like checkmate in 4-5 moves to the extensive 43-44 moves like from a game of Kasparov or Bobby Fischer. I find chess has made me very more analytical as it relates to situation (especially those relating or revolving around conflict). I look a situation 5-6 different ways before i decide what to do.

Norfeast groovin…
Glad to see this thread get upped. I was watching a doc on Ben Franklin a few week back and there was this very interesting thing he would do in his younger days to improve his overall self. He'd basically list certain practices and virtues that were important to him and see if he would adhere to these things throughout the week for a months time.

I've applied that to things like my reading, writing, and exercise and so far it works pretty well. I'm hoping to add more activities to this as I get more acclimated to this method. Seems like a good way to learn things in a more efficient manner.
