Await Further Instructions (2018) - IMDb
Yo I enjoyed this for it's outside the box take and the way it bobbed and weaved against my expectations. To me, there was a bit of an overt political message in the allegory that I could see pissing off and distracting more conservative minded people, so be warned. Anyway; a prodigal son returns home to introduce his new indian gf to his estranged family and the disconnect between the son and his family is quickly apparent (this is where the politics plays heavy). Things take a turn when the son realizes that the family is all trapped inside the house and they have no communication coming into or going out of the house except for a message on the tv that says "Await Further Instructions."
That's about 10-15 minutes of the movie and then it goes full Black Mirror meets the Stanford Experiment, as the family debates whether or not to trust the messages being delivered which are getting more and more extreme. It's very much a psychological horror about who to trust and who to listen to; but there's a huge layer on top in the mystery of who is sending these messages through the tv and what's going on outside. When we finally get the answers, things get really crazy but in a way that I found a lot of fun. It's not a long watch, the plot moves quickly and there's rising action throughout...it does teeter on camp territory and the some supporting actors are pretty bad (the sister specifically), but it manages to be unique imo and that makes it worth a look.
Not great, but it'll keep you entertained and I really appreciate that the "we're gonna go for it!" attitude that makes a story like this pop.
