Peeped Mara this weekend and it's pretty solid but generic. They basically took sleep paralysis and made a legit horror movie out of it...and that's not a bad idea. The creature is cool and thanks to the sleep paralysis aspect, instead of typical jump scares; you get characters trapped, looking for where "Mara" is. Sometimes she's just standing still, so you can't tell what you're seeing until she moves. It creates a jump effect with the tension building but doesn't cheapen it or overuse it. They also rarely give you a good look at the creature, less is more has always worked well in horror imo. On top of that, they really did come up with a logic for why people get haunted and how the haunting passes itself along. All of that said, it's not reinventing the wheel so if you're looking for something new; it's not really here. It's a pretty heavy Ring inspired plot right down to how the dead bodies look. You'll see some deaths coming a mile away and there's not really any major twist on the usual formulas. But that being said, I've seen a lot of movies screw up even the most generic copycat stuff; while this one at least had a nice concept to build on with the sleep paralysis thing.
Nothing special, but for a horror fan this one's decent enough to throw on if you're low on reliable options.
