So, I have a pretty firm favorite three horror movies so far this year. Companion at the top, Stephen King's The Monkey next, and then Borderline is a firm number three that I may have to rewatch in case I want to place it higher.
A bodyguard protects a pop superstar and her athlete boyfriend from a determined stalker in 1990s Los Angeles.
Quick Disclaimer: The only thing 90's about this movie is that the athlete BF is semi-Dennis Rodman coded, and it feels like that was only to set up one gag...
Second Disclaimer: This trailer gives away too much from literally the opening scene, but also manages to completely butcher the actual tone of the movie. So it's showing you too much, while also misleading you all at once...
But despite my disclaimers...I really liked this movie. It's got some major flaws, but the bright spots make up for the weaknesses. The performances are all fantastic with Samara Weaving, Ray Nicholson, and Alba Baptista leading the way. Baptista in particular steals the show in every scene she gets. The kills and attacks are all shot really well; often taking things from goofy and slapstick to seriously tense just by changing the music and raising the stakes.
It's a flaw and a strength that this movie takes comedic breaks. I don't think the jokes land as often as they're awkward. But they lull you into a false sense of security before some visceral violence kicks you back into concern. That helps set up some seriously tense moments, and the tension is shot REALLY well. I'd love for this same team to make a movie that's pure horror without giving viewers breaks to laugh.
The plot itself is simple enough. Imagine the Strangers is they were clumsy and goofy, but just as dangerous. It requires some convenient stupidity from characters, but never to the extreme that it breaks immersion. The great acting helps to sell everything.
The creators really threw everything at the wall. They go for it, and the actors do the same. The only part that completely lost me was an impromptu singing moment, but it gets a pass because it's immediately follow by an action sequence that might be my favorite scene in any movie so far this year.
So, this is easily one of my favorite watches so far this year. I'll definitely rewatch it, and I think it could even play as a nice double-feature next to Ready or Not (which is superior, but tonally not too far off from this).
7.3 out of 10...if the jokes and gags landed better, this would be right next to Companion on my list of favorites. If it had leaned more into the horror and less into the jokes, it coulda been my outright favorite. But even with its flaws, it's entertaining chaos.
One last thought: Do yall remember the late 70's/early 80's horror movie where a trio of psychopaths break out of an asylum and wreak havoc on a neighborhood? Dr. Loomis is one of the starring roles. This premise and some of the early bits made me think of it.
