J-Horror Virus, the documentary on Shudder about J-Horror, is great! It's a must-watch for anyone that appreciates J-horror.
It covers the myths, traditions, and culture that helped lead to the J-Horror tropes (like long black-haired female ghosts). They talk about the directors that sparked its rise, and the movies that birthed it...including a Found-Footage horror from 1988 that I'd never heard of:
Psychic Vision: Jaganrei

A TV reporter is making a report about an idol singer named Emi Kato. Emi and her staff are preparing the promotion of her next tune. However, Kyoko finds out that the woman who composed the tune died seven years before.
And this 1991 horror anthology that includes a ghost scare that Kiyoshi Kurosawa would repeatedly evoke throughout his career...it's the Pulse scare that I always rave about. This 1991 movie has the Pulse scare!
Scary True Stories: Ten Haunting Tales from the Japanese Underground
50m

I,want to know about true creepy stories from Japan.
It also has interviews with actresses who played curse girls like Sadako and Kayako. Then, of course, it has all the legendary directors talking about how their films came about, what inspired them, and all of that good stuff. I had no idea that the Ring tv movie predated the books becoming best-sellers. I didn't even know these guys were all friends before any of them debuted.
The portion about Ringu is worth the price of admission alone. Takahashi and Kurosawa were over hear exchanging scripts for Ringu and Cure to trade notes and ideas. No wonder those are two of the greatest movies of all time. I can't stop gushing about this ish...great documentary.
