Where do y'all stand on comedy/horror? I wouldn't say it's my favorite sub-genre but if it's done well of course I'll like it..
There are some great horror comedies, and even some horror icons (Chuckie and Freddie, for example) have gone the comedy route. Tucker and Dale vs Evil and Cabin in the Woods are comfort horrors for me.Where do y'all stand on comedy/horror? Agreed on this. It could’ve played itself more subtle for sure. Thought that was what they were going for in the first half until the cat was out of the bag completely.100% this! Those are the exact movies that came to mind with how the first half was building.
I agree about the rush to get to the action too. I feel like the biggest missteps for the movie, are which scenes it prioritizes. The flashbacks should have been left VERY quick instead of showing us everything in detail. I think it would have paid off even more if we got small glimpses of those scenes and even more focus on the women's reactions as they remembered what happened.
There's a really interesting philosophical question about how a person might act toward another person, if they knew everything would be forgotten. But by showing the over-the-top party, I think they actually undercut some of the impact...I also don't like that the ending flips things so that, now the woman is the boss and Tatum is alive but servile. That's not the karmic retribution I'd pull for at all. Especially not when they had those red bags set up to be more than just aesthetics.
But it's mostly storytelling slips. The direction was definitely strong, and I bet the writing will only get stronger when Kravitz tackles another subject. I'm glad she has a clear voice and isn't afraid to tackle controversial stuff. A strong POV is the best base for a creative.
