Where do y'all stand on comedy/horror? I wouldn't say it's my favorite sub-genre but if it's done well of course I'll like it..

I like all degrees of it. Which ones would you consider done well?

Here's what I mean by different degrees.

Beetlejuice- heavy on Comedy light on horror.

Gremlins - step up in horror but still mainly a comedy.

Return of the Living Dead - about equal parts comedy and horror.

American Psycho - horror and dark comedy

American Werewolf in London - Mostly serious horror movie with funny parts.

There are some great horror comedies, and even some horror icons (Chuckie and Freddie, for example) have gone the comedy route. Tucker and Dale vs Evil and Cabin in the Woods are comfort horrors for me.

100% this! Those are the exact movies that came to mind with how the first half was building.

I agree about the rush to get to the action too. I feel like the biggest missteps for the movie, are which scenes it prioritizes. The flashbacks should have been left VERY quick instead of showing us everything in detail. I think it would have paid off even more if we got small glimpses of those scenes and even more focus on the women's reactions as they remembered what happened.

There's a really interesting philosophical question about how a person might act toward another person, if they knew everything would be forgotten. But by showing the over-the-top party, I think they actually undercut some of the impact...I also don't like that the ending flips things so that, now the woman is the boss and Tatum is alive but servile. That's not the karmic retribution I'd pull for at all. Especially not when they had those red bags set up to be more than just aesthetics.

But it's mostly storytelling slips. The direction was definitely strong, and I bet the writing will only get stronger when Kravitz tackles another subject. I'm glad she has a clear voice and isn't afraid to tackle controversial stuff. A strong POV is the best base for a creative.
Agreed on this. It could’ve played itself more subtle for sure. Thought that was what they were going for in the first half until the cat was out of the bag completely.

The late Jean-Marc Vallée’s ‘Sharp Objects’ adaptation on HBO did a really good job with not showing you all of the trauma. Some of the most haunting flashbacks are sprinkled in that give you just enough insight on the main lead’s tragic upbringing, but still leaves the bulk of the horror up to the viewer’s imagination.

Recommend watching this one sometime if you haven’t yet, especially if you’re a fan of dramas set in the southern gothic scene. It gets spooky. Some of the imagery just sticks with you.

Avengers compound
Zombielamd 1 is a great mix of comedy and horror. Scary movie 1 and 2 though granted it's more comedy :yeshrug:Shaun of the Living dead:ehh:Evil Drad Rise is probably the other side of the spectrum more horror than comedy :ehh:Gremlins (plus Gremlins 2 for me) and American werewolf in London are great choices.

Did an Orphan/Orphan First Kill back to back. I always liked the first one and it holds up. Part 2 I’m watching now. I’m almost done with it, but that midpoint plot twist really took me out. Had me like :gucci:

It seemed like it was gonna be another weak sequel, then switched up with the twist. It’s really a Jekyll and Hyde movie. I understand they didn’t wanna make it be just another copy and paste of the first, but got damn, couldn’t they think of something better? I honestly don’t know why a third one is being made. It’s really unnecessary. :francis:

Enjoy them
killer clowns from outer space is a classic
Evil Dead 2 is damn near a classic live action extended Looney tunes episode

But for some reason Australia nails horror comedies, undead (2003) is one of the funniest horror flicks I have seen.
