Doc of Chucky (2024)

it about 5 hours long -
I watched it in increments
its actually very detailed, and goes in depth for eaxh flick
One of the better docs on a horror series i have seen.

From the producers of Never Sleep Again and Camp Crystal Lake Memories:gladbron:

I threw on Room 237 when I went to bed after watching The Shining:mjlol: those people are crazy. I fell asleep for like 15 minutes and someone was talking about how Ridley Scott faked the moon landing and I just turned it off. I haven't gone back to finish it.

The shining is my wife's favorie horror flick
She even likes Doctor Sleep
she considers Room 237 an Indie high brow Comedy

It actually gets worse after the faked moon landing theory :russ:

and if that isn't bad enough, one of the theorist stated that Danny’s hand-knit Apollo 11 sweater is linked to Room 237 because the average distance between the Earth and the moon is 237,000 miles? ( its actually more, but let them cook.)
Side note: I have a t-shirt of that sweater that I wear to horror cons

Also,
one even has a theory about the Genocide of Native Americans and the ghosts are the "natives"seeking revenge,
even though all the ghosts shown in the movie are of the physical victims of the Hotel

Some one brings up an ww2 Holocaust theory

Yea I can believe it. I don't know why I said Ridley Scott:snoop:

It's probably because I got done watching Species and I'm watching Species II. I don't know how you went throw Xtro, Scanners, and Wishmaster franchises. Species II is fun but I'm not sure if I can make it through 3 and 4.

West where the Sunsets
Slumber Party Massacre

Typical 80s slasher. A little more bloody and violent than some of the other 80s low budget slashers I’ve seen.

Toxic Avenger

This is fun. Was surprised how graphic the preteen and dog deaths were. :picard:

Looking forward to watching the other 3. How’s the Nuke ‘Em High series?

I've only watched the first Nuke Em and I liked it. Let's us know how the Toxic Avengers Sequels are. I watched Sgt. Kabukiman N.Y.P.D. and didn't like it. You might idk.

HELL YES

that's an insta-watch for me.

I've rewatched NSA maybe 10+ times in one sitting over the years.

Even though I think Jason > Freddy, CLM was mostly boring cause most of the films' problems were money. nothing really all that interesting.

Now that October is done, it's time for me to catch up on the 2024 horrors I haven't watched yet that have some critical love. My list includes Speak No Evil, MADS, and Cuckoo. But I'm starting with

Blink Twice -
When tech billionaire Slater King meets cocktail waitress Frida at his fundraising gala, he invites her to join him and his friends on a dream vacation on his private island. As strange things start to happen, Frida questions her reality.

I didn't realize this was made by Zoe Kravitz. Anyway, it's got an outstanding cast with some really nice performances (Channing Tatum really owns his role). The story itself starts off pretty slow, with people getting wasted and way too subtle foreshadowing. So, for basically the first half of this movie, it's more like Saltburn than a horror...sure the workers act a bit odd, and there's a bit of mystery but the characters don't acknowledge the missing patches of time enough for tension to form.

But the movie flips after an inciting incident, and it goes from being too subtle to aggressively forward. There's a bit of comedy when characters finally talk about weird ish that COULD have helped build tension, but now it's being exposition dumped. Then we get flash cuts to certain events that are really over-the-top...like, we're going from party vibes to cartoonish levels of villainy in a flash.

The messed up stuff does feed into a chaotic conclusion that's pretty effective. But it feels like we missed out on tension-building and the tone shifts are so dramatic that while each individual part is fine on its own, I didn't feel like the story fully hit. It requires suspension of disbelief to the extreme, and I just didn't feel enough tension to warrant a second watch. The end is good, but getting there is a chore.

4.5/10 from me...maybe I'll give it a better score after some time and reflection.

I thought it was okay for a directorial debut. I’d definitely categorize it as a thriller, though I can’t fault anybody thinking it’s a horror with the parallels to Diddy, Epstein, and Hollyweird in general.

The cinematography popped out to me the most. I noticed that, the direction, the well-acted cast, and understood why it got a theatrical release. The story on the other hand bites more than it can chew. It tries to juggle both lanes as a dark comedy and a serious thriller when it probably should’ve stuck to just one, because the tonal whiplash was felt. It wants to do what ‘Get Out’ and ‘The Menu’ did, but it can’t.

I agree with you on how cartoonish it got. Reminded me of how wild Tarantino’s stuff can get in the closing act, but Quentin is masterful at building up to those moments. Zoë impressed me with some of the direction, although I’m not sure what the rush was here. I’m all for the pay-off if they had spent just a little bit more time basking in the journey to such. They also could’ve capitalized on Tatum’s performance by exploring that character more, but instead he just comes across as villain of the week material.

The disclaimer at the start, while I understand why it was placed there, already let me know where the flick was headed and took away a chunk of the mystery from the get-go. :francis:

100% this! Those are the exact movies that came to mind with how the first half was building.

I agree about the rush to get to the action too. I feel like the biggest missteps for the movie, are which scenes it prioritizes. The flashbacks should have been left VERY quick instead of showing us everything in detail. I think it would have paid off even more if we got small glimpses of those scenes and even more focus on the women's reactions as they remembered what happened.

There's a really interesting philosophical question about how a person might act toward another person, if they knew everything would be forgotten. But by showing the over-the-top party, I think they actually undercut some of the impact...I also don't like that the ending flips things so that, now the woman is the boss and Tatum is alive but servile. That's not the karmic retribution I'd pull for at all. Especially not when they had those red bags set up to be more than just aesthetics.

But it's mostly storytelling slips. The direction was definitely strong, and I bet the writing will only get stronger when Kravitz tackles another subject. I'm glad she has a clear voice and isn't afraid to tackle controversial stuff. A strong POV is the best base for a creative.
