Horror thread's 31 days of Halloween List - Day 28 - 28 Days Later
Four weeks after a mysterious, incurable virus spreads throughout the United Kingdom, a handful of survivors try to find sanctuary.

I've watched the "28" movies more than I care to admit. Something about their version of societal collapse felt more real to me than a lot of zombie movies before it. I wonder if this movie dropped right as I was coming of age.

Anyway, I forgot all about the score for this movie. It's completely contradictory to what's happening on the screen in a way that really lands nicely. It almost feels like a documentary between the soft music and the gritty cinematography. It's not quite found-footage, but it still carries this vibe like you're beside the characters.

My only complaint is that the romantic side of things feels rushed, though maybe that's realistic given their circumstances and stress. It's interesting to think that the most prolonged tension-building scenes come when our MC's are surrounded by soldiers rather than creatures. The leader's speech about people killing people is a hell of a "what have we gotten ourselves into" moment.

This one's a gem, no questions asked.

The List:
1. Triangle (Prime)
2. The Loved Ones (Paramount+)
3. Salem's Lot 2024 (Max)
4. Be My Cat: A Film for Anne (Tubi)
5. VHS Beyond (Shudder)
6. *Choose your own* - Haunt (2019)
7. Don't Go in the House (Tubi, Youtube)
8. Cure (Internet Archive)
9. Masque of the Red Death(Pluto/Apple TV+)
10. The Eyes of My Mother (Max)
11. Henry Portait of a Serial Killer (Peacock)
12. Curse of Chucky (Netflix)
13. *Choose your own* - New Religion (Screambox)
14. Junk (2000) (Youtube)
15. Detention (2011) (Tubi)
16. Sleepaway Camp (Peacock)
17. The Skeleton Key(Peacock/Apple TV+)
18. The Witch (Max)
19. Brain Damage 1988 (Tubi)
20. *Choose your own* Thesis 1996
21. Audition (Tubi)
22. J. D.'s Revenge(Tubi/Brown Sugar/Prime)
23. Dead Silence (Tubi)
24. Sinister (Max)
25. World War Z (Paramount Plus)
26.
The Burbs (Youtube)
27. *Choose Your Own* - Session 9
28. 28 Days Later

29. Black Christmas (Tubi)
30. The Shining(MAX/Apple TV+)
31. John Carpenter's Halloween

Next, we get the original slasher. We get POV shots before Michael Myers, breathing funny before Jason, phone calls before Ghostface, and toying with victims before Freddy. Billy walked so the other slashers could fly.

Horror thread's 31 days of Halloween List - Day 29 - Black Christmas (Tubi)
During their Christmas break, a group of sorority girls are stalked by a stranger.

I already mentioned this, but Billy is the first slasher in my book. You can find aspects of him in all the best slashers that followed. The kills are pretty damned good too, and that body in the rocking chair is a creepy sight.

My only guess for why Halloween landed better is that its cast was a bit tighter. With less characters, we get more invested in the handful we see having conversations. Black Christmas has a lot of characters and moving parts, plus a healthy chunk of characters that aren't particularly likeable.

That said, the extra characters add some color to the situation. The pregnancy subplot makes me wonder about the zeitgeist when this was made. The sorority mother with booze hidden all over was funny. The cops are incompetent but at least they help move the plot forward.

Anyway, I have a lot to say because it's such a classic. A great horror for the home stretch of the marathon.

Next up, one of my three greatest horror movies of all-time. I go Texas Chainsaw Massacre, The Exorcist, and this next one for my top three...but I can never pick an order.

I swear I ain't copying y'all lol. Despite 'The Texas Chainsaw Massacre' being a true classic in every sense, I've only seen it maybe a few times from beginning to end so each time I do watch it I'm still picking up new or interesting details. You can't beat the first murder in terms of scariness and what the fukk just happened. It catches you completely off guard, Leatherface lookin very demonic, dude leg twitching after the first blow and just like that, vanished in record time. It's shot like a damn snuff film. Here's a hot take, does he kind of deserve it. White folks are real bold snooping around other people's property like that. Speaking of the cinematography, the whole movie is plain unsettling and creepy from the start, the score lends an assist with that as well. I like some of the documentary looking aspects to the camerawork as well. Such a classic.

Before I watched Black Christmas are any of the remakes worth watching after? Or should I check out some other old slashers?

The remakes to 'The Amityville Horror' and 'The Texas Chainsaw Massacre' with Jessica Biel are solid off memory. I don't believe they are better than the originals but they are fun.

The walking from the ground up ass shot that was in the original TCM was perfect for Jessica Biels ass. Phenomenal casting :wow:

I tried to watch the Amityville Horror remake one time when I was really high but I had to turn it off. I got to like the 2nd or 3rd scene where the lights kept flashing and was like, " These a$$holes are trying to give me a seizure.":russ: I should watch that and the og since I never had.

I was talking about the Black Christmas remakes. There's one from 2006 and 2019. I'm about to watch the og from 74.

The original 'The Amityville Horror' is a must watch if you haven't seen it. It's a classic.

Horror thread's 31 days of Halloween List -

29. Black Christmas (Tubi)

the main prototype of the 70's /80's slasher

Silent night bloody night came out 2 years earlier but doesn't get the love Black Christmas does
and doesn't have many of the tropes that get copied from this movie.
heck you can even add
TCM
Bay of Blood
Psycho
Peeping tom
to the list of "Protoslashers" that led to this film.

Black Chrisatmas has a lot of the DNA that Halloween and Friday flicks build on though
its basically just a giallo without the colors & less mystery
and not actually seeing Billy just adds to the creepyness of the film.
it has a stellar cast and the film is just overall..........................dark
its a wonderful Horror flick though, shame it never got a proper sequel.

The Alamo draft house is showing this in December and i may just go see this on the big screen.
Bob Clark just had classics

oh and my cousin has another ....to this day....theory :russ:

he swears peter is the killer and just has a split personality

I'm like breh, Billy gives a whole damn monologue at the end of the film and calls the house one last time

dead people can't do all that

Black Christmas was a banger.

I see Margot Kidder is also in Amityville so I'll give that a watch. That's probably the first appearance of slutty/drunk foul mouthed friend that's jokes a lot and always dies in slashers.

The sorority house mom that had alcohol hidden throughout the movie reminded me of Nancy's mom from Nightmare on Elm Street. Of course John Saxon plays a cop in both movies.

I watched Blood Rage (1987). About a kid who kills someone and then frames his twin brother and gets him sent to the loony bin. Framed bro gets released as an adult, fukkery ensues. VERY 80s cheese. It's weird cuz this movie apparently came out in 87, but it's 1983 in the credits. Also just titled "Slasher" in the opening. :mjlol:Also called "Nightmare at Shadow Woods"

the acting is hella stilted but the proto-synthwave soundtrack is fukking FIRE, wow. I must say tho the mom character really pulls off the look of an alcoholic traumatized lady who is stuck in 1974. Bleak ass ending. I rocked with this alot, solid 8/10.
