Watching a 10pm screening of ‘Late Night with the Devil’ with a packed audience at the Alamo is an experience that will be hard to trump for a while. Times like that is why I’ll always support the theater business. Definitely enhanced the watch.

Had a really good time with this one overall though. I give it an 8/10 because while I found myself loving the tension building throughout, I wasn’t too much a fan of the ending. Thought it would go even more balls-to-the-walls, and in a similar way Eric Andre oddly embraced the fukkery on his own weird ass talk show, lol. I was reminded of that show so much during the build-up too. Like there were moments of laughter, but I can also feel there’s something ominous going on underneath that I just can’t put my fingers on yet. The journey was fantastic and this will be an easy, no hesitation cop on 4K Blu-ray.

I dug how on point most of the cheesy effects were, they worked for me and came across as a love letter to the ridiculousness of 70s/80s era horror. There were some bits in this that also reminded me of the absurd V/H/S segments I wanted more of (HAIL RAATMA).

1. Frame-by-frame sequence with the ghost
2. Changing of the aspect ratio
3. The worms :damn:
4. Ol girl who played Lily was fantastic, and I actually thought she was creepier when not possessed.

Honestly, the build-up is my favorite thing about this whole project, more so than the pay-off. I got my money’s worth well before Lily turned into a cosmic deity and murked them folks.

My not-so-favorite moments:

The opening monologue and flashback story bit with Lily. Both set the tone but ran a little too long for me. I think trimming those would add ambiguity within the story and give the flick plenty more time to showcase how off-the-rails things had gotten for Jack in the climax, IMO. I wanted to see them dive further into his mental break in the end, and include bits of him cracking jokes and getting zero applause from the soulless audience.

Those are just two nitpicks I have because I otherwise fukks with how tight the runtime is here.

Watched The Grudge (OG remake) for the First time since it dropped in theaters. I didn’t really care for it back then since it’s slow, but I thought it was decent. I never knew this and Ring were Japanese remakes. The Ring is the better film tho.
Now it’s time for you to watch the Japanese versions so you can watch the classic Sadako vs. Kayako

Here’s some quick thoughts on what I watched these last 2 days:

.Stake Land 1 and 2 - this is the only thing I can recommend. It’s about a duo traveling a post-apocalyptic America after a vampire plague. The first one is an underrated gem. The second one is a step down and not as engaging as the first, but still all right.

.My Soul To Take - It’s okay, at best. It drags in the first act and the characters are just not interesting enough to really care about the movie. Not the worst thing I saw this week.

.Chawz - SK creature feature that was about 20-30 minutes too long. There’s some comedy involved. The kills are weak. Probably worth a watch if nothing else is available.

.Hard Ride to Hell - direct to DVD film that had me fast forward to the end after 30 minutes of trying to watch it. Don’t bother.

.Another Evil - I was on the fence about buying this, but there was mostly positive reviews about it. I wish I kept my dollar because it’s just meh. It’s character focused, and although the antagonist is a little interesting, it’s not worth the time. I ended up FFWD it after 45 minutes. It’s labeled a horror comedy, but there’s barely any of either.

.Slaughterhouse Rulez - another horror comedy. I was looking forward to it since Simon Pegg and Nick Frost are in it, but it turned out to be just okay. It’s a creature feature, but the creatures aren’t seen until the midpoint. Not big on laughs, but I got more chuckles here than Another Evil.

I just watched imaginary. Movie was wack and I checked out as soon as they ripped off the deadlights from stephen kings It. And this movie felt longer than 1 hour and 44 minutes. Boring as fukk for the first hour. I give this movie a skip rating. No need to watch this.

Damn I was about to give this a try.

@The Collector I watched Stake Land 1 when it came out and really enjoyed it. Was scared to watch the second one. Normally sequels released 6 years later are bad so its good to hear that it isn't terrible.

If you like the first one, then the second should be fine to watch. It’s not as bloody or gory as the first though.

Really wanted to like ‘Stopmotion’ more than I did. Effectively creepy but one that falls short when it came to the plot. It is a slow burn that takes a while to get going, which I usually like, yet for this one it seems as if the film never fully gets off the ground until the very end.

Have to give credit though to how stylish it got, the animation bits were unsurprisingly the best parts. Between that and the sound design, both aspects help the project come across as fresh, especially when the whole descent into artistic madness theme is something I’ve seen plenty times before. When the film actually manages to crank the body horror insanity up to a 10 is when I found myself truly dialed in.

Would likely hold this one higher had it spent more time digging into that nightmarish imagery earlier on and less time settling for mundane drama elements.
