Just got back from "X". I LOVED this movie. It was a great mix of camp, self-deprecating humor, suspense, and gore. There's a lot of self-awareness of what it is and what it's emulating. It was just really fun, IMO. The kills were great and gross, and I really like the way it ended. There's a nice little twist there that pretty cool and gave a double meaning to the title.

9/10 because they were doing these weird camera shots of the future while the present is taking place, but it only happens here and there, but overall, it's a great time.
Them transition scenes went from genuinely unsettling to :unimpressed:. Not that I hated them, but its effect wore off after the 2nd time for me.

I may need to do a rewatch very soon. I remember really liking it but feeling like I was left with the blue balls in the end. I was basking in its atmosphere and wanted even more gore, which is kinda nuts considering how brutal the kills are.

Am I crazy though for considering this to be A24’s most accessible horror film so far? Like I know the pornographic angle can make for an uncomfortable watch, but I think the casual movie-goers will have fun with it and not feel overly depressed or fatigued by its tempo. It has its layers in the story but nothing to be considered overwhelming like a The Lighthouse or Midsommar.

Definitely on my watchlist today - one of my fave actresses. Her first foray in to the horror genre. (Other than Scary Movie, I think)

lol@ blue balls. I didn't have that feeling but I definitely agree there was a build-up but it never quite exploded into the standard climax. I found it satisfying, but I think one more really big struggle or fight or something would have made it perfect.

And yeah, you're definitely right about this being A24's most accessible horror film. I thought the porno angle worked perfect for this movie, and while it may scare some away, it's less abstract/esoterical/artsy than previous A24 efforts. I still think it was artsy though, but it stayed grounded in a way that will appeal to the average casual horror fan.

I'm hyped. I know people on Twitter were complaining about more racial trauma porn but this really doesn't look like that to me. It looks like they are creating a ghost story with a racial angle, which is different than racial porn. I didn't know it was on prime. Sweet. I can watch it at home.

i think im desensitized to gore and fukkery. This was the most tame of the A24 horrors ive seen. It was solid but i was expecting something wilder

I liked that they circled in some real CRT concepts (particularly one central tenet about using "colorblind" to mask a lack of self-awareness), and that the actual scares were genuinely well-done IMO. It also had a lot of moments about conformity and profiling that worked in the narrative. I'd put it like this, it didn't just use trauma-porn to replace scares, it had haunts with a bit of ambiguity about them. But it did touch on trauma from both a racial and campus perspective in more than one way. I just didn't think it was tasteless about it like some other joints have been. I did the whole university and grad school thing, worked at a uni for over a decade after, and a lot of this hit home or at least connected in a relative way to stuff I've seen over the years.

That said, I wouldn't blame people for seeing it as straight trauma porn. Especially because of a "ripped from headlines" twist that didn't land for me like I think it was supposed to...although it did completely catch me off-guard, so there's that.

It's clearly Get Out inspired. It's got critiques of university campuses, facades of woke culture, and white liberal power structures failing to address racism. But there's actual horror throughout and I felt like this really had something to say as opposed to a lot of the other Get Out inspired joints that center black-trauma but don't do or say anything else about it.

For a couple of the others I've been like "well I can see where they tried to get a message in there." With this one I was more like "okay, that's the message stated plainly and the narrative definitely supported it."

Now I really want to see it. Great review.

Watching it now.. about to hit play. I’m the first one of those people who complain about racism trauma porn but I don’t think this is the case either. I’m going into this movie with no lead up and reading no reviews -so I hope this is the case.

Wildest thing about X is that if someone would've just knocked the dust off of that ancient nymphomaniac's kitty cat they could've avoided all of the tragedy that befell them.

OK, this trailer played before 'X'. It's called The Hatching and it looks crazy AF. I can't quite tell what's going on, but I have a few theories.

I missed all the trailers before X because I show up to movies at least 15-20 minutes after the start time since that is how long the trailers tend to run nowadays.

I kinda get where you are coming from with the blue balls feeling just because we didn't really get the full Final Girl experience with this movie and instead it just came to a pretty abrupt end just when I was expecting more of a cat and mouse situation to occur first.

I still really liked X though. And Ti West was making me geek out with all of the shots that were homages to other horror movies.

@storyteller or anyone else who watched “Master” - real quick question. Please tell me there’s redemption value in the conclusion of this? No spoilers please. Yes or No? Because I can’t continue with this if there’s no adequate conclusion to the strife.
:snoop:
That’s all I need to know right now bc I don’t want to start my weekend off agitated at the insufficient traumatic outcome. Too much racist whitery and I’m only at the 21:00 mark. Rather not.

(Doesnt help that “Jasmine” in this movie looks like my freshman year college roommate and we both had to interact with dumb ass girls in the dorm on some us v. them timing until we set boundaries . Resemblance is spooky)
