What's up with the metal Ghost Face mask in the new Scream trailer?
I saw "Old" a few weeks ago - that could have easily been marketed as a drama. My cosigns: Blood Red Sky, Fear Street, Last Night in Soho, Malignant, Wrong Turn
My on the fence ones (They're up there but they'd be the first ones I'd replace if I came up with enough other titles): Saint Maud, Lucky, WerewolveWithin
I disagree on (I'm replacing these if I get a chance): Willie's Wonderland, Quiet Place 2, Psycho Goreman, and Halloween Kills.
I haven't seen yet: Old, The Vigil, The Stylist
Titles I'd probably add: Broadcast Signal Intrusion, The Night House
That is not a bad list at all. I don't think there was any movie they chose that I absolutely hated...some of them I had quibbles with in their execution but I think I liked everything on their list to varying degrees.
The only thing on that list I haven't seen yet is Last Night in Soho.My cosigns: Blood Red Sky, Fear Street, Last Night in Soho, Malignant, Wrong Turn

I have found myself grading M Night stuff on a sliding scale in recent years and if it looks like the project has a fully formed idea and it isn't dull as all hell I tend to be more forgiving.I saw "Old" a few weeks ago - that could have easily been marketed as a drama.
Typical M. Knight with the interesting lead up and premise, but then he turns the "dramatic series of events" into filler material and plot holes left unclosed. It's not a bad movie but it definitely didn't live up to the hype in the opening trailer- and then it took a very weird turn after 45 minutes in - ending with a lot of questions unanswered. Movie feels like had it been developed into a 6 episode Netflix series rather than a movie, it could have better potential. But it feels like he had a lot of different ideas and ran out of time to piece it all together effectively. Felt like he was trying to do a mix and match of Lost+ Fantasy Island + Cabin in the Woods. The character reactions to certain scenes didn't help - very weird movie.

I really liked what Nic Cage did in Willy's Wonderland so that is probably why I am not hating on it being EW's list.
Removes the "Nic Caginess" of it and the movie is a mess.
I loved Psycho Goreman for the Troma vibes and the fact that a genocidal alien assassin was out-eviled by a psychotic tweenage girl.
With their hit TV show on the brink of cancellation, six actors decide to film their own horror movie, unintentionally summoning a spirit with an affinity for violence.
Exactly this ^^I have found myself grading M Night stuff on a sliding scale in recent years and if it looks like the project has a fully formed idea and it isn't dull as all hell I tend to be more forgiving.
That is where I landed with Old.
This is it? the trailer has meRandom new film I've been working through in increments:
Untitled Horror Movie...It's very meta, very comedy-horror.
Honestly, I'm working on it in increments because it's got some redeeming qualities but it's not really my bag. It's got the "Hollywood is so vapid" satirical vibe that helps some of the jokes but also works as a crutch to cheat past some "horror-logic" decisionmaking by the actors. Outside of one kinda cool bit, the scares are a letdown. Someone strangling themself will always look odd and unintimidating no matter how hard they try...but I guess that's low-budgets and zoom horror for you. Less effects to work with. Anyway, the saving grace is that the characters manage to be vapid and self-interested but also kinda charismatic. Their interactions have some genuinely funny moments and every character feels at least thought out despite fitting some tropes. So yeah...I don't really like it, but it's different and I haven't seen many new movie namedrops, so this is an option. It's not terrible, I just wasn't feeling it.
"Untitled Horror Movie" seems like it's a satire/parody version of this actual horror move "Safer at Home"Random new film I've been working through in increments:

All I will say about Prisoners of a Ghostland is that it is wild.I definitely need to give it a look because it seems like the second-most polarizing horror movie of the year (Malignant has the crown imo). That Lost + Fantasy Island + Cabin in the Woods sounds right up my alley, but the general disappointment sense I get from most people also has me feeling like I might hate it (like how I loved the concepts behind the Empty Man but didn't like the execution at all).
Last Night in Soho is definitely in my top-5 of the year, probably in the top 3. Ironically though, I didn't feel much like I was watching a horror movie until the last third of the movie. But still really enjoyed the experience.
I'll be honest, Nic Cage was about the only redeeming feature of Willy's Wonderland for me. I liked the other Five Nights at Freddy's rip off more and even that was pretty "meh" in my book. (Speaking of Cage movies, I still haven't watched Prisoners of a Ghostland because of the shudder issues I'm having).
Psycho Goreman definitely nailed the Troma vibe (Toxic Avenger felt like it had to be partially an inspiration). The comedy of it was top-tier. But I probably won't watch it twice, so stacking it on a year's best list feels unfair to me. If I ran a horror-comedies list or craziest, it'd be in there along with the one where a cracked out dude gets abducted by aliens...that movie was nuts.
I wasn't feeling this movie when I saw it either. Here is my post about it:Random new film I've been working through in increments:

Watched this movie called Untitled Horror Movie this morning...it was nothing spectacular but not crap either.
You could tell it was something a bunch actors who were friends decided to do over the pandemic shutdown and there were some humorous moments but there was very little horror in this "horror-comedy".
