Finished watching all 7 saw films again.

I did so because of the announcement of saw 8 coming next year. Which I'm cautiously optimistic about because its directed by the spierg brothers who did predestination which I loved.

Anyway off top let me say,saw 1 is an iconic horror film wether you agree or not.

That theme :banderas: I can't think of any other recent horror films that had the instant classic theme music like this.

Jigsaw himself along with the puppet is iconic. :banderas:

So let me say that after rewatching all of them I have a new found respect for these films. These are bar none the best horror franchise films in consistent quality. Way better than Halloween, Friday the 13th or nightmare on elm street. Now I'm not saying that individually the saw films>>>those but I'm saying for consistent quality they are.

Why? Well because Saw is the perfect horror franchise to marathon. It's actually amazing how much effort the writers put into these. 1-6 can be played basically as one long film. Particularly 4-6 which often start right where the last one ended.events iften run concurrently. So events in 3 hapoening at the same time as 4.In fact I'd say the series has 2 trilogies 1-3 which were all written by whannel and 4-6 which were all written by Melton and Dunstan.

The smallest details of these films are followed through. I was often :mindblown: at just how detailed these writers were. Watching them all in marathon form is the way they need to be watched because it's the only way to truly appreciate just how much effort they put into being consistent with the mythology. Like you really have to pay attention to these films because they play around with stories and time lines so much. The twists are :ooh:

That's why they stand above other horror franchises for me. Now other franchises may have films that stand above any saw film but they often veered in quality wildly from one film to the next breaking their own rules and mythology.

I think one of the reasons is that they keep everything in house. Having the same writers is huge. Editors of one film promoted to director. People worked on these films from start to finish and obviously put a lot of love into them.

In fact I think the 2nd best film was the 6th and it's up there with the 1st even. I loved that in 5 all the victims in the game were all randomly connected to 1 incident. And that 6 had deeper political leanings attacking the insurance/medical industry.

With all that said. 7 is horrible. 1-6 are consistent. Everything from the writing to the directing to the look. It's all had time and effort put into it.

But 7 :scust:. It is truly awful and doesn't feel like any love went into it. It's got a horrible look that doesn't match the rest of the film's, the traps especially the one in public is :what: because it's never been done in the series before. 7 throws out all the rules and mythology of the series. It's terrible. Hoffman suddenly turns into the terminator. I could literally write an essay on everything wrong with this thing. It's spider man 3 and x men last stand levels of bad in comparison to its franchise.

So I dug a little into it. First the cinematography was done by the same guy for 1-6. Someone else did 7 and it's obvious. Blood looks pink. The whole film has this made for tv look to it instead of the grimey aesthetic the rest do. It looks really low budget yet has the highest budget in the franchise.

On top of that, the director was forced into doing the film. And he made it known he was pissed. He talked shyt about the film before even starting it :pachaha: why? Because he was scheduled to film paranormal activity 2. Lions gate didn't like that the PA films were releasing around the same time as saw and cutting into their money. So they flexed on the director in some contract stipulation and forced him into making it like 2 weeks before production started. They even had a director already who had made saw films. They were just being dikks and wanted to sabotage PA. :what:

So he comes on,talks shyt about the film and then forces rewrites on it even though a lot of the pre production was already done.

On top of that originally the writers had planned to end the film's in 7 and 8. But after 6 only made 70 million they decided to combine 2 films into 1.

So after reading all that I was :beli:

The series was hitting a high point at 6. And the ending of 6 was :banderas: like its a flat out good horror film. 6 even redeemed amandas charcater and her actions. So to see 7 become what it is especially it being the "last" was :camby:

Anyway, I recommend marathon in them all to anyone who hasn't watched them in a while and didn't hate them. I think you might have a new found appreciation for them like I do. It's such a rarity in horror for a franchise to be treated with this much respect by its writers...except 7. fukk 7.

Side note, the guys who wrote 3-7 also made the collector which was originally pitched as a saw prequel.
