u should really research this. first I got my FOID card, then started researching.

Buying A Handgun

that is a great tutorial that tells u all the basics.

both of my guns are .40's and my wife can shoot them. she's only 115 lbs, so its not about how big u are being a contingency on what u can handle.

Best thing to do is to go to a couple of gun stores and see what's comfortable to you. Then if they have a shooting range you can rent different guns to see which ones you feel comfortable actually shooting with. Take a couple of gun safety classes which I know they will have and you'll be able to make the decision on your own.
