My uncle always says your trigger finger is the best safety. Training and having disclipine with that will protect you better than any thumb safety.
I obviously am not a fan of safeties on my guns, if i can help it. Why i like the glock.

But I’m not you or your uncle and I have no idea what y’all’s firearms training entails. There’s no downside to having a thumb or grip safety, or decocker.
I picked up my first (and only) polymer pistol the other day. It has an ambi safety that’s very easy to disengage. My fear would be having it in an IEB holster, disengaging it on accident, and drawing the weapon thinking it’s on safe when it’s not. It’s a striker-fired pistol with no hammer or decocking mechanism either.
Gun will be relegated to backup EDC or car CC only cause of this.
