man, the cost of heat has gone thru the roof this year. despite it being mild, my bill this month is up over 50% vs what it was last december despite using slightly less heat. check this out.

people's energy is outright stealing from us, as they have tripled the cost per therm vs 1 year ago. fukking outrageous. anyone else experiencing this kinda sticker shock?

Unfortunately it's across the state/country/globe.
Natural gas prices have been spiking globally, with industry analysts pointing to a number of factors, including its growing use as a cleaner fuel for electrical power plants. Increased demand, supply disruption and a February cold snap in the U.S. also contributed to surging prices.

On Wednesday, the U.S. Energy Information Administration released its Winter Fuels Outlook, which projected that nearly half of U.S. households that heat primarily with natural gas will spend an average of 30% more this winter. The Midwest will see the largest projected increase, with prices 45% higher than last year.

You might want to check an alternative for slightly reduced rates:
In October, natural gas prices were up 198% at Peoples Gas, 125% at Nicor Gas and 91% at North Shore Gas over the same month last year, according to the Citizens Utility Board, a nonprofit Illinois watchdog group.
Spiking natural gas prices may add hundreds of dollars to winter heating bills in Chicago

Also, check out CUB for people fighting for cheaper utilities whenever they try to raise rates or stiff elderly customers

man, there's literally nothing I can do about this. I mean, who is gonna be out here with no heat in the winter.

these types of rising cost I would assume would drive up the price of rental apartments as well where the landlords typically pay for the heat.

I mean if I'm paying significantly more for heat, I simply won't be spending money elsewhere on more frivolous things. its a simple opportunity cost.

but I gotta be concerned about folks who cannot afford this type of crazy energy cost fluctuations.

People's Gas gets their gas from Nicor Gas. Nicor is the primary supplier.....so it's almost like paying for 2 vendors.
