what you know bout the cubs and dominicks that used to be on Lincoln Highway and pulaski @ab.aspectus :wow:

Try when I was 7 my daddy took me to TCF bank inside the Cubs Food to open my first checking and savings account. :wow:

And when I was 8 and went to deposit money in my account, I saw Mexicans in the parking lot that had some type of disorder that made their teeth take the shape of fangs like a vampire. I was shook, and that was the last time I went into Cubs Food. This was before it moved down the road to the Heights. Or my memory is short, did it move from the Heights to Matteson? I can’t remember? I think it was the heights location that we opened the account. :patrice:

Anyway, because I would never go back, we closed the account and opened one at the Harris Bank in the biggish building on the corner of Lincoln and Cicero.

And I was born in Athena Park, and so we mostly went to that Jewel that was on the opposite side of us on Lincoln and Western and Dominick’s was our back up. We owned property in CC Hills and would also go to that old Country Market that was on 183rd and Pulaski. I remember I used to love that place too. They had a soda pop machine that had the best pop for like $0.25 cent. :wow:

What you know about that Fazolis that used to be over by Dominick’s right next to the Taco Bell? :wow:

What you know about that Ponderosa that used to be right over there on Lincoln and Western in front of the old Jewel? :wow:

What you know about Queen of the Sea that was on Western across from Jewel on the Heights side? :wow:

It look like the apocalypse over there now. :mjcry:

On Sundays, we wound attend Mass at our old family church in the city and we’d rush back out to have lunch at Ponderosa, Red Lobster, Baker Square, Michaels, Olive Garden, Old Country Buffet. There was a steak house on Cicero right before Lincoln, can’t remember the name, we’d go there often. Or dinner at the original Aurelio’s in downtown Homewood. Those were the days.....

@ab.aspectus Mr Bennys was the steakhouse on Cicero, they closed and moved to mokena :mjpls:

And that was a eagles food on 183rd & Pulaski

and yeah it’s depressing to ride down Lincoln now, that area was Orland status when we was coming up.

Yeah, Benny’s and Eagles Country Market. Yeah we left the area in 96’/97’, still kept our property out there though.

One thing you gotta understand is Roseland was like the Orland of its day. It was department stores, shops all down Michigan. My grandma worked at Gatelys in the 70s. Mom went to St Willabroad @FocusedDaily

Had no idea.

When my mom’s people lived in the city, they lived in Washington Park and Woodlawn. And was one of the first black families to move into Englewood when they first came to Chicago. So we ain’t really know too many people from the 100s or went over there much. All I knew about that area was them historic Pullman homes that you see passing by on the IC.

St Charles is old money but Glen Ellyn and Elmhurst arent really that posh
There are areas in Aurora near Fox Valley Mall that have 300-500K homes. I'm more talking the area around the mall and Eola Rd not like Downtown Aurora which is more regular

Waubonsie is in Aurora but is basically on the border with Naperville. I actually lived 5 minutes from Neuqua but it wasnt built yet so I went to Waubonsie. My sister is 2 years younger so she ended up going there.

My pops worked at Bell Labs and it was pretty high paying job(6 figures bac in the 90s) and most of his blac co-workers who made $$ lived in West Aurora, Lisle or Naperville

Ah...gotcha.
I didn’t realize there were many black people in Lisle. That shooting at that cigar shop kind of surprised me.

We moved to River Forest in the late 90’s from the south subs. I knew some black families in LaGrange that were chemists and worked worked at Fermilab and a few of the other labs out that way. We’d go out to Fox Valley occasionally. Oak Brook mall was ten minutes away from us so that’s where we primarily went.

I eventually attended Fenwick but my parents entertained sending me to IMSA for a hot second.

St. Charles is nice, especially the Campton Hills area. But we’ve always viewed Glen Ellyn as being a bit more posh. I know a few people from Glen Ellyn and they are legit old Chicago money whose families had ties in founding Nothern Trust Bank. We always viewed Glen Ellyn as being a half-step below Hinsdale.

I used to go out to St. Charles to the Q Center for training. The Q Center used to be a compound owned by Arthur Anderson right on the Fox River. After Anderson was dissolved, the property was purchased by a few of the big accounting firms and so that’s where they sent us for training. After training, we’d go and act a fool in downtown St. Charles. Folks would get so drunk they’d go skinny dipping in the Fox River.

South Side Chicago to Nola
I think Mariano’s has the best produce by far and the prices are decent as well. They just got bought out by Kroger’s, some people are saying they’ve started messing with the brand already smh.

i like marianos for all the other stuff they had, but back when i came home for a minute, i would go to food 4 less or Pete’s or jewel

Roseland ain’t the same no more like some of yall have said, too many dusty nikkas running around who don’t care bout shyt.

I remember swimming in Palmer Park pool, going to my cousins games at Gately Stadium. Block club parties in the summer. Walking with my grandma to the grocery store on 103rd & king

I ride through certain blocks now and it’s disappointing to see them decline cuz the old heads either moved away or died off :mjcry:

even tho I’m partially a suburban nikka, them summers and weekends spent in Roseland with my grandma and cousins definitely molded a young breh :wow:

Palmer park has a nice pool, and i played pee wee/little league baseball at gatley, and they used to have that farmers market over there sometimes, shyt i sometimes would go to olive harvey for their summer camp, and i def went to olive Harvey for Chicago south swim club for competitive swimming

Gangs and drugs.

A lot of old folks who owned homes for decades didn't have anyone responsible enough to takeover the house and pass it down to. Mainly because of the influence of gangs and drugs. Same goes for Black owned businesses that were so prevalent at one time.

grocery store on 103rd & king
But those hot meals though :banderas:

Interesting you think jewels gonna go out of business like Dominick's? Ion think save alot n food for less will be around next couple yrs if this gentrification spreads out more outwest and in Englewood ova east

Jewel has the brand recognition and they also have the benefit of some very good locations so I doubt they're going anywhere anytime soon. Whether people like them or not (and I personally avoid Jewel at all costs nowadays), a lot of ppl (myself included) end up spending money at Jewel for no reason other than convenience. Another thing ppl may not realize is that Jewel is actually owned by Albertsons which is one of the largest grocery store companies in the country. That helps protect them against the Walmarts/Targets of the world.

The thing with Save a Lot and other budget/discount grocery stores is that they are actually more profitable than the bigger names. Even rich people are a lot more budget minded (one of the reasons why for instance sales of generic/private label products has exploded), and poor ppl have to eat too. If the neighborhood starts to change, the store will evolve to meet their needs. You see that with Jewel. The ones in the West/South Loop are very different than say the one off Cicero near 79th.

Couple of my homies stayed on 107th and Langley :ohhh:

I’m not sure about now but I remember 107th and Langley being :demonic:
I lived on Eberhart, and I WAS NOT allowed to go to that little corner store east of cottage on 107th.
That place was a shooting gallery in the 90's, they eventually just tore the entire store down. North Pullman is not South pullman lol

In the 80's / early 90's Lincoln mall on Sundays was high key the place for middle class black folks to stunt. Like even if we didn't go to church, my mom would make us put on our nice clothes to go out there lol. Then when river oaks got converted to indoor, that became the hot shopping spot. Now they're both dead

Palmer park has a nice pool, and i played pee wee/little league baseball at gatley, and they used to have that farmers market over there sometimes, shyt i sometimes would go to olive harvey for their summer camp, and i def went to olive Harvey for Chicago south swim club for competitive swimming

What's good Tiger Shark breh. My parents didn't' have time, but I had my oldest daughter in CSSC for years. But that had me sitting poolside at Olive Harvey, Chicago state, or some random suburb 3-4 days a week for YEARS. She loved it tho.
