Black-owned East Coast-style pizzeria opens in Optimist Park

A new pizza spot has come to town. Oh, and it’s Black-owned.

In Optimist Park at 510 E. 15th St., Bird Pizzeria opened last Wednesday, serving artisanal East Coast-inspired pizza.

The husband-wife duo of Kerrel and Nkem Thompson had their first date over pizza and got inspired to open the shop as they reflected during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Name: Bird Pizzeria was named after Kerrel’s love of birds.

“He can name like all of the birds in North America, so it’s kind of like always been a thing with us,” Nkem says.

Menu: For now, Bird Pizzeria is offering kale salad, pepperoni, white and build-your-own in 14-inch pies. Nkem says offerings will gradually expand to include bigger pizzas, individual slices, sandwiches and more.

Prices: currently $10-$23.

How to: Order online on Bird Pizzeria’s website or walk up. Outdoor seating is available.

Hours: 4 p.m. - 8 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday, 4 p.m. - 9 p.m. Friday and Saturday.

Black-owned brewery and burger joint coming to NoDa

Black-owned brewery and burger joint coming to NoDa

By Laura Barrero | December 17, 2021

Atlanta-based Hippin Hops Brewery is coming to NoDa in the summer of 2022.
Why it matters: It’s Georgia’s first Black-owned brewery and it’s expanding to Charlotte, which hasn’t had a Black-owned business making and selling beer since Three Spirits closed in 2019.
Context: Owner Clarence Boston is a born and bred North Carolinian, and has ties to the cities dating back decades.
  • He once owned Boston’s Mortuary on Statesville Road, and he lived in NoDa for about five years before moving to Atlanta.
  • “We just really missed Charlotte,” he told me when I asked him about the expansion.
  • Boston also co-owns Firehouse Bar & Lounge, and Recess in Plaza Midwood.
Flashback: Boston says he got his drink-making skills from his great-grandmother, who used to make fruity wine out of muscadine, peaches and green apples. “But we didn’t really like wine so they bought me and my brother a home brewing kit and we started making beer,” Boston said.
Now it’s 22 years later, and Boston has a successful brewery, a distillery, and an oyster bar — and he’s bringing those skills to Charlotte.

Details: Hippin Hops will open at Bainbridge NoDa on North Davidson Street. It’s at 2509 North Davidson, across from the original Amelie’s location.
  • It’ll have indoor and outdoor space, totaling 3,900 square feet.
  • They’ll also serve gourmet burgers.
As for their beers, Boston tells me they specialize in sours, IPAs, wheat beers and stouts. Their “So Peachy” is their best seller.
  • “We’re trying to open it up to people who don’t really drink beer,” Boston said.
Good luck to them but I don't think Black Breweries will work there. I'd love to see them thrive but Three Spirits shut down even with having good word-of-mouth.

The median price of homes in Charlotte has gone up over $50,000 in one year :mjlol::huhldup:
shyts crazy, & they go fast. I gave up 'trying' to buy a crib here.

Lol, I had the same thought initially. But like breh said location could have been a big factor. It's a few breweries about a mile up the road Olde Meck, Yancey.. Queen Park Social, etc.

Black-owned food truck opens brick and mortar
db9f8272-84e2-641f-20e2-a7fa88a9be36.png

Romeo's Vegan Burgers opened their restaurant on Saturday, December 18th. Located on South Blvd., near the Costco, opening day saw hundreds in line 3 hours before the ribbon cutting at 1pm.

Charlotte rapper, Tigo B, and his manager Lamont Heath opened Romeo's food truck just over a year ago.

Romeo's servers burgers, fries, milkshakes and more. The restaurant allows customers to eat inside or use the drive-through. Follow Romeo's on Instagram to learn more about the new restaurant.
Man people don’t talk about them enough. The fact that they went from food truck to brick and mortar so quick is amazing… and during the pandemic. :wow: Good good too.
