Dan Rafael chat wrap 10/13:
- Crawford vs. Spence needs some marinating. Would be surprised if it happens next year.
- Probably more money in Pacquiao vs. Horn 2 in Australia than in Vegas.
- Jo Jo Diaz vs. GRJ? Bad fight for Diaz.
- Chico Corrales not being on the HOF ballot is a disgrace. Told the executive director of the HOF that.
- Fights left this year most interested in? Charlo-Lubin and Lomachenko-Rigondeaux.
- Charlo vs. Lubin prediction? Changes mind a lot on this one. Currently picking Lubin.
- Also picking Lara and Hurd.
- No news on Garcia vs. Rios. Would be a disappointing fight if made.
- Lemieux will not fight again until the mandatory vs. BJS. Would like it to happen in December, but it may be February according to GB.
- Does not think there will ever be a single organization running boxing.
- Thought the ref in the Eubank fight should have waited a little more to access the situation before stopping the fight.
- More deserving for the HOF: Broner, Rios, Fernando Vargas? Would not vote for any of them, but of those easily Vargas.
- Good chance we see Frampton vs. Valdez in 2018. Both fighters want it, Arum and Frampton's managers want it. Arum and Frampton's managers work well together.
- Mikey Garcia will find out being independent is tough. Promoters won't give you a lot of great fights if you don't sign options. Just how the business works. GB had talked with Garcia about getting him the Cotto fight, would have given him Linares, and also the ability to fight Matthysse. They could have also easily worked with Frank Warren to get Flanagan. Promoters aren't bad all the time. You need a good lawyer to make sure your contract is in line, but promoters can really help your career.
- Cotto vs. Garcia? Would have picked Cotto, but it had a ODH-Pacquiao feel to it. If Garcia lost, so what, it was to a bigger HOF fighter. If he won he makes himself a star.
- From GB's perspective why would they make Cotto-Garcia without getting options on Garcia? If Cotto wins they wouldn't have made much money. If he lost then Garcia is allowed to walk away.
- Cotto vs. Ali is not the best fight, but Cotto deserves to end his career however he wants.
- So far the Super Series tournament fights have been good, just the US TV deal is pathetic.
- Vitali is not considering coming back and fighting Joshua.
- Sor has asked for an exception to do a defense in Thailand before fighting Estrada.
- Salido vs. Berchelt is signed and is supposed to air on Dec. 9. Silly for HBO to put it opposite of Loma-Rigo. They put Cotto-Kamegai opposite Floyd-Conor and got nothing out of it. ESPN is going to put a lot of marketing behind Rigo-Loma, HBO will lose by putting Salido-Berchelt on the same day.
- Thinks Spence has something line up (beyond Haymon), but it just hasn't been announced yet. That said, reportedly Haymon is giving Spence $3.5 million for his next fight. Too much to turn down.
- CompuBox is a great resource, but pure punch stats do not determine the winner of a fight.
- Whyte vs. Wilder is fake news. After Ortiz failed his test it was always going to be the mandatory Stiverne. Plus, no one in the US cares about Whyte, so it would have done nothing for Wilder.
- Interested in seeing how Joe Joyce does. His handlers want him to fight for a British or Commonwealth title in 2 or 3 fights and a European title shortly after. They think he can be ready for a world title within 10 fights.
- Arum has said he will do an ESPN card with Zurdo defending in Mexico next year.
- LSC is in a mismatch with Avalos. It should not be sanctioned as a title fight. Mares is in tougher with Gutierrez.
- Gomez and Loeffler are in contact about a GGG-Canelo rematch. They will meet again next week. No hurries, the fight will get done.
- GGG vs. Jacobs or GGG vs. Canelo? Both fights would be good, but the Canelo fight is the bigger event, so he prefers that one.
- Spence was offered the fight vs. Cotto. Would have picked Spence.
- GB was offering Spence the fight with future options. A lot of promoters are after Spence. If Haymon's roster was a draft, Spence would be the #1 draft pick and it isn't even close.
- Lennox Lewis vs. Larry Holmes? Great fight. Would lean Lewis. Not as good of a jab, but the bigger man with better power. Also, maybe a little quicker.
- Thinks Eubanks wins the WSSB, but Brant is a darkhorse.
- Porter vs. Granados is a good fight, but Porter is just the better fighter.
- Prime ODH vs. Cotto? Great fight, would lean ODH.
- Frankie Gomez? No one has heard from him in a long time. A waste of time and money GB put into him with purses and signing bonuses. One of boxing's biggest busts.
- Will believe a Joshua vs. Wilder unification when he sees it.
- Having Mayweather, Klitschko, Ward, Cotto, RJJ, Toney, and Pacquiao all eligible for the HOF in the same year might actually get them to amend their rules (only 3 allowed in per year).
- Does not believe Kovalev has a trainer yet.
