Smith: Pavlik Nothing Compared to Me; Tougher Fight for Hopkins

By Keith Idec, photo by Tom Hogan

NEW YORK – Bernard Hopkins didn’t predict that he’ll beat Joe Smith Jr. on Saturday night as easily as he defeated Pavlik eight years ago.

But the former undisputed middleweight and light heavyweight champion did discuss Smith in the same sentence as Pavlik, who was undefeated yet ill-equipped to deal with Hopkins’ experience and toughness when they fought in October 2008. Smith made sure to let Hopkins know, though, that their scheduled 12-round fight in Inglewood, California, won’t look anything like Hopkins’ dominant victory over the much younger, supposedly stronger Pavlik.

“Kelly Pavlik’s nothing compared to me,” Smith said. “In that fight, he was straight up, coming straight forward, towards [Hopkins]. It’s not gonna be anything like that. He’s gonna see a totally different fighter than Kelly Pavlik. I’m stronger, faster, a way better boxer. And I’m just motivated to get to the top, and I’m not letting him stop me from getting there.”

Common Joe out here talking shyt about someone who reached the top and beat better:pacspit:

Pavlik Manager: Smith a Joke, Hope Hopkins Slaps Crap Out of Him

“First of all, Hopkins was 43 when he fought Kelly,” Dunkin told BoxingScene.com. “He’s now 51. That was eight years ago. And my guy was a middleweight. This guy’s a light heavyweight. My guy was a 60-pounder and fighting a much better Hopkins. Kelly knocked out Jermain Taylor. What’s this guy ever done? He hit Fonfara with one punch in the first round. Anything can happen in the first round. We’ve never seen him go the distance with anybody who can fight and he has a loss on his record already. And that certainly wasn’t against anybody any good.”

“Comparing Pavlik and [Smith] is a joke,” Dunkin said. “It’s like a Rolls Royce and a Volkswagen. This guy’s a joke. It’s ridiculous for him to make comments like that [about Pavlik]. And I was rooting for the guy because he’s young and fresh and everything. I’m not rooting for him anymore. I hope Hopkins slaps the crap out of him, and I think he will.”

“This one pissed me off,” Dunkin said. “Somebody should defend Pavlik. He was a world-, world-, world-class fighter. When he beat [Edison] Miranda, nobody gave him a shot. And to go and beat Taylor twice – to knock him out and then go beat him by decision in the rematch, I mean, my goodness, he’s a real fighter. And he was a middleweight, much smaller than Hopkins, and giving up weight. “And yeah, he got slapped around. But he never complained about being on an IV, being sick and having the flu. He went ahead and fought because he wanted the money. But he never complained about that, never cried. He just said, ‘Hey, the guy was too good. The guy was a great fighter. I couldn’t hit him and that’s the way it is. I wasn’t at my best, but I don’t know if my best would’ve done anything with this guy.’ He was so great to Hopkins, such a professional, and to have some guy demean you like this, a guy who landed one punch against a guy who was 28-3, who’s not a great fighter himself – I’m not smoking on Fonfara, but he’s not a great fighter. And he had one lucky punch, and he’s never done anything. To come out and say Pavlik was nothing compared to him, Pavlik could’ve given this guy 15 pounds and beat the crap out of him.” - See more at: Pavlik Manager: Smith a Joke, Hope Hopkins Slaps Crap Out of Him - Boxing News

Kelly Pavlik was way better than Common Joe. Never knew he was battling the flu & had IVs in preparation for the B-Hop fight bc Pavlik never mentioned it:ohhh:

While his concern is not about the weight, Chavez Jr. is concerned with the money. He already received an offer for the fight and made a counter that Golden Boy Promotions, who handle Canelo, are reviewing. Chavez will not entertain a weight that is lower than 165, because it would take too much out of him to get down that far.

"I was told that the fight could happen at 165-pounds. Canelo already made an offer, I threw back a counter-offer. If we get a good deal I am ready to sign. I do not know if there are a lot of clauses. If the negotiations are good [the fight can happen], unless they ask for things that my body can not do," Chavez told ESPN Deportes.

"If [the negotiations don't go well with] Canelo then I will have to look for other options, like the winner of Badou Jack and James DeGale or Gennady Golovkin. I also have other options but at the end of the day the two of us can get together in a fight that can be a big help to boxing."

As Orlando Salido waits on Vasyl Lomachenko fight, he's driving for Uber
Lance PugmireContact Reporter
Orlando Salido came here this week to pick up his World Boxing Council fight-of-the-year award for his epic June 4 draw against super-featherweight champion Francisco Vargas at StubHub Center.

Next week, as he awaits word regarding approval for another apparent can’t-miss bout against Vasyl Lomachenko, Salido will likely burn some hours serving as an Uber driver.

“That’s what I do,” said Salido, 36, who lives in Phoenix.

Mexico’s Salido (43-13-4, 30 knockouts) maintains he doesn’t need the money from the Uber job to survive. But in the downtime of waiting for a fight deal to get done, he said it’s an enjoyable way to stay busy and get some pocket money.
