I've been trying to figure out why this past Ward-Kovalev fight has been bothering me...

More specifically, why Ward's performance has been bothering me...

I'm a huge fan of Ward, he's the prototype athlete for young black males across the nation. I'm was ecstatic when I heard "and the NEW" :blessed:

But..... something has just been BOTHERING me that I couldn't articulate into words.... and it's NOT the decision. I felt that it was a close fight that could've went either way, but was a 60% chance of going Kovalev's favor due to him being champion, scored knockdown, stalking, landing tit for tat, etc

I mean... ever since Ward has returned, something has just been bothering me, but now more than ever.

I was sitting in a coffee shop last night thinking about it, and I may have figured out what it is...

Vibe with me on this but..... Ward hasn't gotten back into full-swing yet. While I do believe it's obtainable to do so, and go even higher. I just feel like I'm watching Ali in the 70s, and not the 60s. For this reason, I also believe this was Kovalev's shot at dethrowning the P4P great, and the rematch will be a lot more decisive in Ward's favor. However, that's just hopeful thinking, I'm not convinced Ward is the fighter before the layoff...no offense to Kovalev, he's a great fighter.

Sort of like Mayweather-Pacquiao... I assumed that Ward was on that "other" level. Perhaps I was wrong, maybe those days are over. Or perhaps, he just hasn't gotten there (and beyond) YET...

I had these same thoughts
I totally agree. I thought he was closer to mayweather than he actually is.
I think people like rigo and crawford are above him, where as before i thought he trumped them.
The intelligenc remains but he's no longer fluent or sharp at all.
I noticed it in the brand fight and this fight made it clearer.
He's definitely sliding @patscorpio .
No way in hell would any version of mayweather let someone with kovalev skill, mid range out box him.
And let's be clear,it was Kov's skill not power that gave ward his biggest problems early in this fight.
Kovalev is basiscally a Light heavy Viktor postol with better power.
And from mid range, ward couldnt fukk with him at all.
Dont get me wrong, what ward did in the second half is what he should have done the whole fight rather he could beat him at mid range or not.
Because that's Kov's only dog in the race (take it away)
However, someone like crawford, mayweather rigo would not lose a mid range boxing match within someone like Kov.
And ward didnt look any faster than Kov with his hands which really shocked me.

Or maybe.....just maybe.....Kovalev is actually a great fighter himself in his prime? :ld:

There's still no one at 168 or 175 that I would favor over Kovalev...except SOG:manny:

I assumed he was, or may actually be. 1 thing I'll always say I'm right about is, those three bouts against Barrera, Smith, and Brand were a bad idea. Can't fight C class fighters to prepare you for A class, especially with that long layoff :manny:

Roy Jones... that's another thing I was thinking about, those first 2 Tarver bouts

I distinctly remember the first fight being blamed on the rapid weight loss, yet the great Roy was able to find a way to win. In the rematch, he'd leave no doubts as to who was the better man. Then..... it happened. No excuses to turn to, nothing to point the finger at, he was just no longer the fighter we once knew , without many of us, if anyone, realizing it.

@patscorpio I don't know if he's slid or not, it could just be, as @Newzz points out, the nature of high competition. It's tough to say. I'm not sold that he's out of his prime or on the slide, but I'm also not sold that he's at his best currently.

I'm having a hard time trying to explain it, it's just a feeling about watching him the past year or so. I need to examine this closer and rewatch the fight.

hmmm I wouldn't go that far but there are definitely similarities....I just don't think they on the same skill level. like postol don't counter as good as kkk. he don't have better spacing, not as quick and not as accurate.
