GARY RUSSELL JR. GUNNING FOR LEE SELBY NEXT; VOWS TO "SLAUGHTER" VASYL LOMACHENKO IN A REMATCH
By Percy Crawford | November 08, 2016
garyrusselljr.jpg

PC: Is the Lee Selby fight the fight you are hoping to have as your next bout?

GRJ: I would love the Lee Selby fight. I would love to fight him next and be able to unify the titles. That's definitely something that I want to do, but a lot of these guys that are considered champions are not in a rush to get in the ring with me.

PC: When you speak about Vasyl Lomachenko, it seems like you are in a different zone; a zone we don't get to see you in that often and I told your father that. I think in the Showtime interview, you really stated your desire for that rematch.

GRJ: (Laughing) That's me; it's just a version of me that people haven't seen a lot of. My thing is it's not for the fans. It's definitely for the fans in a sense, but this is something that will haunt me for the rest of my life, especially due to the fact that I didn't believe that I would be able to do 12 rounds shadowboxing after what I had to endure before the fight. He won the fight not based upon what he did, but based upon what I didn't do. That's a different level. That's a different animal. He definitely gotta see me and I'm going to slaughter him!

PC: And you have looked spectacular since that fight.

GRJ: Definitely! Even in that particular fight [vs. Lomachenko], in the 1st round, you saw no speed and no real power. You didn't see any of that. I was tired in the 1st round. I came back to the corner and I told my dad, "I'm tired." He was like, "What? What you mean you're tired?" I said, "Yeah, I'm tired. I don't have no energy." I was arm punching in the 1st round. And everybody was asking, "What's wrong? Is there something wrong? What was going on?" I had no energy at all. I lost so much water at that point so fast that...it's crazy when people say you had a mirage. The only time you hear about people having a mirage is when they are in the desert or somewhere where it's hot and they lost so much fluid from their body that they're starting to pull the fluid from the brain. That's where these mirages come from. In that particular fight, my sense of distance and range was off, meaning he would be 6 feet away and I felt as though he was 4 feet away and I'm still punching. My sense of distance and range was off in that fight. I'm a gladiator and a warrior at the end of the day. I fought a hard 12 rounds. I only watched the fight twice, but I really believe that I put him down in one of those rounds with a left hand that they didn't call a knockdown. But that's not here nor there. I don't care if he lose his next 10 fights, before I finish my career in this sport of boxing, we gotta rumble again!

PC: You have always approached boxing in a strategic way and you recently said that you probably only have about 6 fights left. Is that just a matter of your upbringing to not want to stick around this thing too long or is this just the blueprint that you laid out for yourself?

GRJ: It's just the blueprint of my life. I'm at the point of my life where I have lil' ones and I want to spend as much time as I possibly could with them. Being a fighter, it splits my time in half training two to three times a day. The time that is spending with my babies and the time that I'm spending with my wife is limited. But it's limited for a purpose. It's definitely a purpose behind it; financial stability for my family. I feel as though I've been financially smart thus far. I just want to be around my babies. But I got some stuff I gotta finish off before that. I got some things I need to accomplish before that (laughing). And then on top of that, I got my younger brothers coming up behind me; Gary Antonio Russell and then we got Antuanne. He was a 2016 Olympian and they robbed my lil' man. They robbed my lil' man.

PC: They definitely robbed him. That kid is smart beyond his years. When I interviewed him, I felt older.

GRJ: (Laughing) It's a genetic trait, man. It's been passed down from generation to generation and it's supposed to be better. I was their first prototype. Even when it comes to me boxing or competing. My father saw what was in me. Okay, well, "I'm going to do the same stuff that I put in him, but I'm going to add this little extra." Everything we do is a learned behavior. We use other peoples' experiences. My little brothers have the opportunity to study somebody. I didn't have that opportunity to study somebody or to get up at 3 in the morning and we're in the kitchen and be like, "Bruh, does this body shot look right? Is this right?" Now we up from 3 in the morning until about 4 in the morning full out sweating; working out in the living room just because we wanted to work on something. I didn't have that. My little brothers have that and they have room to grow. And my father, it goes without saying how I feel about him. A lot of people ask how did I feel when I won a world title and x, y and z. I was excited, but my excitement wasn't for me, it was for my father. I was excited that I was able to honor my father with that. I pride myself on being in the gym everyday. Even when I'm not getting ready for a fight, I'm in the gym. It's a lifestyle for me. Half these dudes aren't in the gym until they are getting ready for a fight. It's a lifestyle for me. If I miss the gym for 2 or 3 days, I'm about to go crazy; something is wrong. That part of my day is incomplete (laughing).

PC: I always appreciate your time and it's always good catching up with you and letting you say what you gotta say.

GRJ: I appreciate you for having me, man. You've always been straight forward. I like that, I like that!

So, supposedly he's always in the gym he's saying.....but yet, he was drained to the point he was seeing "mirages" against Lomachenko?:ohhh:

Something is not adding up here:jbhmm:

Just take your L like a man GRJ, and then come back and get Loma. Im tired of hearing about how you are going to fight him again, and what you're going to do.....when you've only fought 3 times in the past 2 1/2 years since losing to him (1 more time in 2014, 1 time in 2015, 1 fight in 2016):comeon:

Manny/Crawford is 60/40 Manny

@synistr A) Nice to see you back in the ring breh. B) If Manny caught T-Craw like Gamboa did, Crawford wouldn't end the fight vertical. You say fast fighters trouble other fast fighters, well Manny is just as quick/fast as Crawford with a more accurate or 'shocking' punch.

If Crawford works behind the jab and doesn't get caught up in his boxers ego, he can and would beat Manny though.

thanks breh :salute:

I think Crawford couldve boxed Gamboa better and got hit a lil less, but that wouldve made for a terrible fight. and remember, last time we "saw" Gamboa, it was against Perez (I actually fell asleep during the fight) also, Crawford was willing to take some heat from Gamboa because he knew if he didnt stop him people were gonna dog him for being the bigger guy....which they still did anyway.

the thing why I favor Crawford so much is because of the footwork. Crawford gets hit a lot of times because is looking for his offense. If he chooses to play defense, he isnt easy to hit at all. Of course, as @Jello Biafra this Crawford makes a somewhat lackluster fight, like he did against Postol because he really respected Postol. He still hurt Postol and put him down so the fight wasnt totally devoid of action even though it wasnt super competitive.

you best believe Crawford respects Manny's power and will be looking to make him miss and make him pay, particularly when he gets off balance. Crawford can box Manny but he wont pull a Peterson, he will be looking to pop him good. The fight will look somewhat like Floyd except Crawford sits down more than Floyd so Manny will have his opportunities, where against Floyd, they were slim and none. Also, Crawford's ability to fight from either stance and deliver power is something not like we have seen in a while. the southpaw stance could really cause problems for Manny.

GRJ is just not that dude I hate to say it. He needs to do his talking in the ring. He could be a much bigger name if he would stay active. He talks more smack than anyone I have seen in a while that fights so infrequent. and frankly to me its :scust:

GRJ gets flat lined by Valdez, Frampton and LSC. Has a shot against Selby but that's about it.

I agree with you about Crawfords foot work, southpaw or orthodox, he has a great ability to judge distance---and thus be able to escape or attack with a simple shift in body weight forwards/backwards.

Also his check hook is :banderas: especially if he can turn the guy at the same time.
