Canelo's Trainer Laughs: We Will NEVER Fight Willie Monroe!

By Miguel Rivera

According to Eddie Reynoso, trainer of WBO junior middleweight champion Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez (48-1-1, 34KOs), there are NEVER going to fight middleweight contender Willie Monroe Jr. (21-2, 6KOs).

Both fighters were in action on Saturday night at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.

Canelo headlined the event, knocking out unbeaten Liam Smith in the ninth round to capture the WBO junior middleweight world title. Monroe was in the co-featured attraction, winning a twelve round decision over Gabe Rosado.

Prior to the fight taking place, Golden Boy Promotions had mentioned that the winner of Monroe vs. Rosado was going to be a frontrunner to face Canelo on December 10th. It's no secret that Golden Boy, and Canelo, were hoping the winner would be Rosado - who is promoted by Golden Boy and has a come-forward aggressive style.

Monroe is the exact opposite of Rosado. He's a very crafty boxer who moves around selects his punches carefully. The fight with Rosado turned out to be a very boring affair and drew a lot of boos from the 51,000 fans in attendance.

Reynoso is not looking to have a repeat of Canelo's 2014 encounter with Erislandy Lara. Canelo spent much of the contest chasing after Lara and the clash of styles didn't exactly generate an appealing fight.

Even so, Golden Boy President Eric Gomez mentioned Monroe as a possibility - but cautioned that Canelo's next opponent will be finalized after a team meeting.

“He’s a very good fighter, a very good boxer,” Gomez said. “As far as is he going to fight Canelo next, we’ll sit down as a team and look at what’s next. We’ll discuss it as a team. He definitely deserves it. I give him all the props in the world because he fought a tough guy in Rosado who kept coming and just couldn’t figure him [Monroe] out. Monroe deserves a lot of accolades for that.”

Reynoso says it's never going to happen. If they are going to fight that type of style, he would rather have Canelo take a rematch with Lara than take a fight with Monroe.

"[Canelo] is never going to fight with Monroe. He doesn't fight or allows a fight to happen. You have to keep going after him to catch him. If that's the case [to go up against that kind of style], it's better for us to fight with Erislandy Lara," Reynoso said.

Canelo's Trainer Laughs: We Will NEVER Fight Willie Monroe! - Boxing News

Maybe he's talking about the fact that Canelo's Trainer doesn't want Canelo to face a mover like Monroe, because they already said he'd never face Lara again.

Funny that they said winner of Rosado vs Monroe would be in line for Canelo, but Reynoso saying :pacspit: to Monroe's style...even though Canelo vs Monroe wouldn't be that bad of an "introduction to 160", since yall saying he needs fights like that to get adjusted

Breh look at the last paragraph of that link you just posted. They're not avoiding him. Reynoso is 100% Monroe doesn't engage or let a fight happen. That's not avoiding him :heh:

He's said they will never fight Lara again because of the fact he moves alot...so to say it would be better to face Lara again means they arent interested in facing movers such as Monroe, Lara, etc period.

It's not avoiding Monroe...it's avoiding the style itself. Only people that even bother Canelo are movers/slick fighters (Trout, Lara, Floyd) and Monroe fights that way as well just on a lower level. It's like Provodnikov when he said he doesn't like facing them either after losing to Algieri. The style presents problems.

There's a difference between ducking a fighter and avoiding a style.

but he said he'd love to fight floyd again:jbhmm:

did you watch the rosado/monroe fight?.....shyt was one of the worst fights of the year. two dudes standing in the ring scared to throw a punch. there was a moment where they literally stared eachother for like 15 seconds. didn't even throw a jab. can you really blame canelo and his team for not wanting to go through again that shyt after what happened with lara?.....this is a guy who bum rushed canelo's press conference, got in his face and called him out. canelo like alright:manny:.....lara finally gets his opportunity then spends the whole night running for his life. i'm not even mad at canelo like "fukk these runnnin ass clowns":camby:........lets ignore the fact that canelo BEAT lara and monroe is in no way shape or form better than lara. it's comedy. canelo is now ducking little g, monroe, lemiux, stevens, andrade, j rock, lubin, the charlo bros. shyt, he's even ducking that lara rematch:heh:

Who doesn't want to fight Floyd again? :heh:

Canelo says he will face a mover like Floyd again...but he won't face Lara again, just like GGG saying he would go down to 154 for Floyd...but won't do that for Canelo. It's the $$$ that comes along with it which makes it worth the loss.:manny:

So you posted all this to basically say they don't want to deal with that Lara/Monroe style again....which is what I said already.

They aren't avoiding Monroe, the fighter. They are avoiding Monroe's style.

........lets ignore the fact that canelo BEAT lara and monroe is in no way shape or form better than lara. it's comedy.

Which, again, is something I already stated above:

It's not avoiding Monroe...it's avoiding the style itself. Only people that even bother Canelo are movers/slick fighters (Trout, Lara, Floyd) and Monroe fights that way as well just on a lower level. BRONER AND EASTER JR. COULD SHARE DEC. CARD

Robert Easter Jr. and Adrien Broner could share the same card in respective bouts on December 17.

Easter Jr., who won the vacant IBF lightweight title in a difficult fight against Richard Commey on Sept. 9, is eyeing a return to the ring in December, Robert Easter Sr. told RingTV.com on Friday. Broner, who is something of a mentor to Easter, is targeting a comeback on December 17, and it’s possible the two Ohio residents could share the same card, according to Michael Stafford, who trains Broner and helps out Easter Sr. with his son. Broner (32-2, 24 knockouts) and Easter (18-0, 14 KOs) fought on the same Spike show on April 1.

“That’s a possibility,” Stafford told RingTV.com of a double-bill with Broner and Easter. “Adrien would like that. That would be a real treat (for the fans) to have them fighting together. We may even throw in (bantamweight titleholder) Rau’shee Warren in there too on the card.”

The venue is still up in the air as opponents are vetted, said Stafford, who described Broner’s fight in December as a “tune-up” before a possible title challenge in 2017 with junior welterweight belt-holder Ricky Burns of Scotland. Stafford said Broner was fine and in good spirits after he posted a number of disturbing messages on social media on Wednesday that suggested he was thinking of committing suicide.

“He was just going through stuff with his girlfriend,” Stafford said. “He came to the gym the same day. I think they worked it out. Now he’s going to take a little trip to Vegas to see a few friends. He’ll come back and then it’s back to business.”
Broner has been spotted in Vegas palling around with frenemy Floyd Mayweather Jr.

As for Easter’s fight in December, it likely won’t come against Jose Pedraza, the IBF junior lightweight champion, who has publicly called out Easter Jr. as someone he’d like to face. “We’ll get the name out shortly,” Easter Sr. told RingTV.com. “We have a couple people in mind but the name is not going to get out there yet.”

Pedraza isn’t on that shortlist of opponents but perhaps it’s a fight that can be made in 2017, Easter said. “That’s a possibility,” he said. “If he wants to be that big of a fool to do that. We’ll have a name shortly. Whoever has belts, we can come and get them.”

December 17th huh?:jbhmm:

I can be there:obama:
