Dan Rafael chat wrap 4/15:
- Finds it funny that people bring up Algieri's education (Master's degree) when it comes to fighting. It won't save him vs. Spence.
- Numbers are not final, but Arum is saying that the Pacquiao vs. Bradley PPV did between 400k and 500k buys. He views it as a disappointment and the PPV probably lost money.
- If Floyd scored Pacquiao vs. Bradley a draw then he knows less about boxing than he thought.
- GGG cannot get fights because the top guys are petrified to fight him. They know how good he is.
- GGG could have an extended run into his late 30's and 40's if he wanted to. He is in shape year round and hasn't taken a lot of punishment so far.
- Does not see GGG fighting Saunders in the UK. Saunders is not a draw in the UK and GGG is the A-side and is a draw in the US.
- GGG signing to Brand Jordan should help boost his profile and may make fighters actually want to fight him.
- Wade is a poor mandatory who had a tough fight with a faded Soliman.
- Canelo vs. Pacquiao is possible, but a lot of things would have to go right for it to happen. It would sell well at Cowboy stadium and on PPV.
- Expects Bradley to continue fighting (in regards to if he may retire). A Jessie Vargas rematch is possible as well as a Kell Brook fight.
- Bradley vs. Cotto? Interesting fight.
- Cotto will not fight June 18, he will fight in the fall. They could not find an opponent to make a PPV with and HBO was not going to buy a fight to put on the regular network.
- Certainly possible Cotto is waiting to get a fall rematch with Canelo.
- Cotto will not fight lower than 150 lbs (will JMM and Cotto fight?).
- Glowacki vs. Cunningham is a very good fight on paper. Picking Glowacki.
- Spence to win fairly handily.
- Has heard some names for Joshua's next opponent, but nothing is set yet.
- Joshua vs. Breazeale? Possible. Joshua by brutal KO.
- The purses on the Spence-Algieri card are much lower than PBC has previously given out. PBC's money issues are causing them to be more cost efficient on purses and other expenses.
- The change up in PBC announcers is likely due to financial issues. Marv Albert, Al Michaels, and SRL are not cheap to hire.
- Believes PBC should have had a more focused business plan. They secured deals with too many TV networks. It is too hard to keep the schedule and networks straight.
- Would be happy and applaud Floyd and Manny if they stay retired. They have made more money than anyone in boxing's history, have had legendary careers, and have their physical and mental faculties about them.
- Who ends up broke first, Floyd or Manny? Manny easily.
- Favorite Pacquiao fight he was at? Cotto and Marquez 1.
- Most people believe that Pacquiao and Bradley were the two best fighters at WW after Floyd retired, so many people think their fight last weekend was to decide who deserved to hold the lineal WW title.
- Pacquiao vs. Crawford? A tough fight and possible Crawford pulls the upset.
- Best 168 lb fighter? Open for discussion, but believes it is DeGale.
- The NBC PBC card is very good. All three fights are interesting.
- HOF inductee classes haven't been that strong lately, but some good classes will be coming up.
- Peter Manfredo is fighting again because he needs the money.
- No air time for the Wilder vs. Povetkin fight yet, as Showtime has not completed a deal with the Russian promoter.
- Surprised that Fury vs. Klitschko is at Manchester arena which seats 20k, thought it would be in a bigger stadium.
- June 4 (Canelo vs. Khan) undercard looks like Julian Ramirez vs. Abraham Lopez will be fighting. GB tried to get Ortiz vs. Ustinov, but Ustinov's side had issues and they are trying to get a fight extension, and Rosado vs. Kirkland fell through because rumor was Kirkland asked for $2 million.
- Favorite commentators? The Lampley/Merchant/Foreman or Steward lineups.
- Duran vs. JCC in their primes? Duran.
- Arguello vs. Duran? Duran by KO.
- GGG vs. McClellan? GGG by KO.
- Crawford and Postol are finalizing their deal to fight July 23 at the MGM on HBO PPV. Arum says his breakeven is 125k buys. Arum wants the fight on regular HBO, but HBO is not buying any fights, so this is the only way to make it happen this summer.
- Martin will likely go down as the worst HW champ ever. Martin's title "reign" was everything wrong with boxing.
- Arum's fights on TruTV are done. He liked the series, but felt like TruTV wasn't the right outlet. They are talking about bringing it back on TNT or TBS.
- Joseph Parker ready for a title shot? Not yet.
- Javier Fortuna and Roman Martinez fights are on the table for Lomachenko. The holdup with Martinez is money.
- Main Events is still looking to do a summer fight in Russia for Kovalev. No opponent yet.
- Hopkins vs. Gilberto Ramirez? Possible.
