Saunders: Standing My Ground, Golovkin Must Come To England!

By Carlos Boogs

WBO middleweight champion Billy Joe Saunders (23-0, 12KOs) has no interest in traveling over to the United States for a unification with WBA/IBO/IBF champion Gennady 'GGG' Golovkin (34-0, 31KOs).

Saunders was scheduled to make the first defense of his title against Max Bursak on April 30th, but withdrew earlier this week with a hand injury.

Golovkin is back in the ring next Saturday night, when he defends his titles against IBF mandatory challenger Dominic Wade at The Forum in Los Angeles.

Saunders wants the unification to happen, but he plans to stand firm on the fight taking place in the UK.

"I'm not going nowhere to America. Let me tell you one thing - I'm standing my ground, I'm world champion. Golovkin has everything in his favor. I want Golovkin in England. Listen, he's gone to France and boxed - so why can't he come to England. I've said I'll take less money to fight him in England, so let him come to England," Saunders told BoxingScene.com's Declan Taylor.

"People don't understand. If I go to America, to beat him in America I would have to really go and smash him up....because you're not going to get it on points. I'm not going to go in there and bully him [in order to win]....no. I'm going to go in there and outbox him, outthink him and outfox him...I think I can. But the more of a chance I have is here in England with everyone behind me."

With the Bursak fight on the shelf, Saunders is very interested in facing Golovkin or another major fighter in the summer. If Golovkin wins next Saturday, his first ordered of business will be the winner of the May 7th clash between WBC middleweight champion Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez and British star Amir Khan. Golovkin is the mandatory challenger to the WBC title. If the winner of Canelo-Khan turn Golovkin down, then Saunders is the obvious next target on GGG's list.

Saunders wants to test his abilities against Golovkin.

"People keep giving me stick about Golovkin. Let's see how good I am. Let's see if I'm the best middleweight on the planet. I'm certainly one of the best in the world as world champion. But lets see if I am at that next level," Saunders said.

"The one thing with me, if the Golovkin fight gets made I'm not going in there lying down thinking he can beat me. I'm going in there knowing I can beat him, a winning mentality."

- GGG cannot get fights because the top guys are petrified to fight him. They know how good he is.
- GGG could have an extended run into his late 30's and 40's if he wanted to. He is in shape year round and hasn't taken a lot of punishment so far.
- Does not see GGG fighting Saunders in the UK. Saunders is not a draw in the UK and GGG is the A-side and is a draw in the US.
- GGG signing to Brand Jordan should help boost his profile and may make fighters actually want to fight him.

- GGG vs. McClellan? GGG by KO.

So much blatant dikk licking :scust:

I'm surprised HBO hasn't signed him up as a commentator yet... In fact, have him and Lampley ever been seen in the same room together?? :patrice::lolbron:

Dan Rafael chat wrap 4/15:

- The change up in PBC announcers is likely due to financial issues. Marv Albert, Al Michaels, and SRL are not cheap to hire.
.

I thought this was ironically funny considering how pitiful they've been as a team. It REALLY makes you appreciate the commentating on HBO and Showtime even if you pick up on the subtle and obvious bias both do from time to time. At first, I figured Marv Albert would get better, but he never really did get better. I guess differentiating between a head butt and right hand is far more difficult than calling jump shot. Yet he uses the same animated voice for both. Jump shot with a second left on the shot clock...."YES!!!! What a shot!!!" Clash of heads mistaken as a right hand....."What a shot!!!" :snoop: SRL on the other hand, one would think he would have brought invaluable insight and commentary to their events. I think years of alcohol abuse along with boxing have taken a toll on his speaking abilities. When they defer to him for insight and there's a long pause and he says sh!t like, "See.......see that there.................. he's doing the right thing......yep........that's right." :beli: :what:

I don't have a critical thing to say about Al Michaels.

PBC does not have it together on that end. The only tolerable announcing team is on PBC on spike cards

Breh, as you know his story changes so much and makes no sense.

First it was there is more money in the UK vs. a career high payday offer for the US. Now it is everyone knows I would take less to fight in the UK. :why:

Now he adds that since GGG has traveled before so he will be okay with it. :what:

Wait, Saunders is the champ so that is a good argument to keep it in your home country. Oh wait, you just won the belt and haven't defended it yet and GGG ranks second all time in MW title defenses, while holding 2 of the 4 major straps. :jbhmm:

We forgot the I can't win a decision in the US, give me that UK home cooking. Except historically I would say cards with home cooking happen more in Europe than in the US. :sas2:

And he goes from saying I can beat GGG and by the time he finishes his own sentence he talks himself down to I think I can beat him, then to I will try to beat him. :yeshrug:

It is just downright comedy at this point. Actually would love to see the fight take place in the UK because no fan base takes L's harder than a hometown Brit fighter losing. If their fighter gets upset or beat the crowd looks straight :to:. I also don't remember the last time a fighter campaigned so hard to make a fight where everything he says is ways to not make the fight. :heh:

Yes I can confirm that the numbers for Pac BobbleHead were low. My dude said they haven't cracked 300 yet. Pac contract always has conditions and subjective to the profits. It's sad that Pac is getting played like that but he must have his reasons for keeping his mouth shut. However Arum always takes good care of the gus on the undercard.

About 97G my dude said the same thing Abel been saying and he said Andre Ward would have gotten the fight had he signed with Haymon. Andre is in a very bad position. He gotta do as HBO says or they can shelf him. He's banking now but he's still in a tough spot because HBO is being very frugal and Andre may be forced to leave Oakland for his fight if HBO says so or gets no fight at all.

@Newzz would be surprised if Broner gets any time. All parties involved got taken care of and he would most likely get community service and unpaid work. That's Broner last strike. Everybody around him knows it. PBC not suffering but things could be better. Thank you Thurman
