Garcia-Guerrero Rejected By WBA For Vacant "Super" Title
By Miguel Rivera
As previously reported on BoxingScene.com, the World Boxing Association will remove Floyd Mayweather Jr. from his position as the reigning world champion at welterweight and junior middleweight. Mayweather retired last September after winning a twelve round unanimous decision over Andre Berto at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.
Something interesting took place, as the sanctioning body received a request from Premier Boxing Champions to sanction an upcoming welterweight fight, between Danny Garcia and Robert Guerrero, for the vacant 'super' championship at 147-pounds. Garcia-Guerrero takes place on January 23rd as PBC's headline fight for their series debut on FOX.
WBA President Gilberto Mendoza Jr. revealed to ESPN Deportes that he denied the request. When Mayweather is officially removed from his current position as WBA 'super' champion at 147 - then 'regular' champion Keith Thurman will assume that position. Mendoza wants to limit the amount of champions in that division to two (David Avanesyan is the WBA interim-champion).
An exact scenario took place last year. At the last minute, PBC made a request to the WBA to sanction a featherweight fight between Leo Santa Cruz and Abner Mares, for the vacant WBA 'super' title at 126-pounds. The belt became vacant earlier in the year when Nicholas Walters failed to make weight for a title defense.
In that situation the WBA approved the request, with Santa Cruz winning the vacant title with a unanimous decision over Mares. Their decision drew a lot of negative criticism, from fans and from WBA 'regular' champion Jesus Cuellar who was angry with the sanctioning body for allowing Santa Cruz, who had never fought at 126, to compete for that belt. The sanctioning body learned their lesson and they were not looking for a repeat of that situation with Garcia-Guerrero.
