K. Porter: I Believe Thurman is Having Second Thoughts

Posted by: Steve Kim on 12/3/2015 .

By Steve Kim

There has been a lot of talk regarding a possible welterweight showdown between Keith Thurman (who holds the WBA 'regular' title) and former IBF beltholder Shawn Porter - two of the more talented boxers under the Premier Boxing Champions (PBC) umbrella of Al Haymon. But as of yet, no date has been set for that match-up.

Kenny Porter who trains and manages his son Shawn, told BoxingScene.com:

"I have been reassured that the Keith Thurman-Shawn Porter fight is going to happen in 2016. As of this moment I haven't received a date, I have not received a venue nor a city. But I have been reassured that they are going to fight."

Porter will be in Brooklyn this weekend to see this Saturday's fight card at the Barclays Center and hopes to get some answers from the powers that be.

"I'm going to the (Danny) Jacobs-(Peter) Quillin fight to be a part of the event, to see the fight, enjoy the festivities of that and hopefully get a few minutes with the people that are involved with putting this fight together to find out what is the status of it and also to let people know that Shawn Porter is ready to fight Keith Thurman or whoever else is wanting to fight us and the level that we fight at," said Porter.

"Obviously, when you're trying to get a big fight like this one put together there's a lot of intangibles, a lot of things to put it together. But I'd like to know if some of those things have come to pass and if some of those things have been accomplished at this point."

So is he as confident in this fight coming to fruition as he was a few weeks ago?

"Three weeks ago is when I received my reassurance, so yes I am confident in that," answered Porter. "But moving forward, we're getting closer to 2016. I do really want to get more information in regards to that. So some meaningful discussions need to happen here, soon."

When Porter is asked if Thurman is reluctant to face his son - who defeated Adrien Broner on June 20th - for whatever reason, he says bluntly - "I believe Keith is having second thoughts in regards to fighting Shawn. There are a lot of guys that know Shawn from the amateurs that know more about him then people know on a professional level. So when you yourself are that guy that's in that tournament with that kid and he's dominating the competition and you're not, and Demetrius Andrade's last loss in the United States was to Shawn Porter but Keith Thurman lost to Demetrius Andrade two or three times, every time they met - those things stick in your mind."

"So I believe that it's not an easy of a pass as most people may think because they just don't know the back history of Shawn and how long he's been doing this. A lot of fans are not educated to the coaches, as well, because I've had numerous opportunities to work with a lot of young professional champions that we have right now: your Gary Russells, your Charlos, and your Demetrius Andrades. I've had numerous occasions to work with all these guys in amateur camps, in professional camps as well."

Porter is convinced he has some valuable inside information on 'One Time' from past experiences.

"So Keith Thurman is no different, I coached him in the amateurs, I've worked his corner in the amateurs, I've worked in his corner in international competitions, I've worked his corner in a professional fight here in Las Vegas. So there's a lot of things that come to play when you get ready to set that fight. You've got a lot of things to think about."

I agree with everything he said here:manny:

Porter should've took a stay busy fight...They wanted a fight by September N won't get a fight til Feb at the earliest...AB who lost in June will most likely have fought twice before Porter gets back in the ring :beli:

I gotta feeling PBC is delaying the fight cuz they want Porter to get that L (he's not a draw, fights ugly) so they keeping him inactive to try N get him at less then 100%

I think the exact same....word for word.

I even told @Mook about how it's crazy AB LOST to Porter, but Haymon went and got him a Championship fight and is about to fight AGAIN since then........while Porter is being treated like a scrub with no fights on the horizon:dead:

If im Porter I move to 154 like yesterday... Why be Haymons 3rd or 4th favorite 147 fighter... When you can be the #1 favorite at 154 (Charlo bout to move up)

Get a belt or 2 N wait for Thurman N Spence who will be at 154 sooner rather then later...Now these nikkas have no choice to fight Porter N you got leverage being the champ

i hope not..it's wack with what's going on with the porter and thurman deal..

Porter's last 5 fights: Wins over Devon Alexander, Paulie Malignaggi, Adrien Broner, Erick Bone. Loss to Kell Brook.

That's a hell of a 5 fight stretch.......he faced 4 of them when they were RING Top 8 opponents, with a tune-up against Bone squeezed in, winning all of em except against Brook. He's coming off a clear cut victory over Adrien Broner, and to me, ALL momentum and "buzz" he could've built off that win over AB is absolutely gone at this point. Casuals don't even remember Broner lost 6 months ago:bryan:

It's crazy. There's no explanation for it and like I said, all I can think of is that he has to be being purposely sat on ice.:wow:

porter's 154 fights were struggles...the reason why he was able to do work at 147 was largely because he was strong enough to impose his style against naturally smaller fighters there except brook who is also a big welter..154 he has L's waiting for him there
