Got a question for you @Yuzo
Any tips for when you're up against the ropes? My friend went back to the gym and is boxing more. Has a bit of skills, nice sharp jab and is good going forward. But whenever he's pressured backwards and ends up against the ropes, he doesn't seem to be effective at all. I never really was either.
How does one effectively fight off the ropes and cornered?
1. get off the ropes
i would be willing to wager that he is probably being forced back into the ropes because he is moving back in a straight line. he is moving back in a straight line because he probably doesnt know how to use circular movement.
to use circular movement press down on your front foot and in the same motion slide the heel of your back foot over to your left. this action is going to cause your body to naturally swivel sideways. now press down on your back foot and in the same motion slide the heel of your front foot over to your left bringing the heel of your front foot and the heel of your back foot into alignment. reset back into your stance or repeat and continue to use more circular movement.
get in the ring with your friend and practice coming forward in a straight line to simulate side stepping a moving opponent using circular movement.
pressing down on your front foot and sliding the heel of your back foot over to your left is the action that causes your body to naturally swivel and get very sideways. when you are coming forward in a straight line make sure you mix in a few light profile right hands to your friends left glove. a profile right hand is a right hand that hits a fighter that is turned sideways. that was how hasim rahman knocked out lennox lewis. heres julian jackson throwing a profile right hand.
you have to make sure your friend is always aware of being hit by a profile right hand whenever he is using circular movement. throw a few light profile right hands every now and then to create a habit of always being ready to bring his left glove up to block it.

now try to have your friend throw a jab with it in the same motion.
a. push off of your back foot and transfer your body weight over to your front foot simultaneously extending your jab with it in the same motion b. now press down on your front foot and slide the heel of your back foot over to your left simultaneously retracting your jab with it in the same motion c. finish it by pressing down on your back foot and sliding the heel of your front foot over to your left bringing the heel of your front foot and the heel of your back foot into alignment.
or try to have your friend throw a check hook with it in the same motion by coming forward throwing a light lead left hook at your friends right glove.
to throw it press down on your front foot and slide the heel of your back foot over to your left simultaneously throwing a check hook and blocking/side stepping the left hook in one smooth motion.
when you are throwing a check hook you cant block right hands with your left glove. make sure your friend fully understands that he can get hit by a profile right hand whenever he is countering a left hook with a check hook. that was how buddy mcgirt knocked out howard davis.
or try to have your friend throw a check hook over the top of a right hand with it in the same motion by coming forward throwing a light lead right hand to your friends body.
press down on your front foot and slide the heel of your back foot over to your left simultaneously throwing a check hook and side stepping the right hand in one smooth motion.
2. get inside
get in tight and pin your head to the area between the neck and the shoulder. heave your body weight onto the chest and hook your arm around the back or around the arm on the same side that your head is pinned to.
this is going to do four different things a. prevent headbutts b. prevent uppercuts c. smother the arm on the side that your head is pinned to by preventing it from having any extension and therefore from punching d. use your opponents head to shield your head and block any punches that can come from your opponents remaining free arm from coming over reaching your head.
it shuts down the arm on the side that your head is pinned to and because your head is pinned and shielded you can work your remaining free arm to your opponents head but your opponent cant work his remaining free arm to yours. this is the safest place that you can be inside of a boxing ring.
when you have pinned your head to the area between the neck and the shoulder and heaved your body weight onto the chest and hooked your arm you can walk your opponent back with it in the same motion to get off of the ropes.
get in the ring and go over to the ropes and get inside and have your friend try to practice walking you back off of the ropes. remember always pin the head and hook the arm on the same side.
