2x...and defending
Dan Rafael chat wrap 7/2:
- No big names available for GGG. He will fight the best opponent available, no one big available for fall.
- Tureano Johnson still possible as a GGG opponent. He was ordered to do an eliminator for Lemiuex's belt. He could turn it down and fight for another belt (GGG).
- GGG vs. Lemiuex or Jacobs? Would heavily favor GGG vs. both. Would want to see both fights. GGG vs. Jacobs won't happen. HBO and Haymon = no fight.
- Who fights Mayweather next: Khan, Porter, or Brook? Believes that none of them will get the fight.
- Khan is the logical opponent for Mayweather, doesn't mean he gets the fight.
- Believes that Mayweather's fall fight will be very lackluster. Has wondered if Floyd may choose not to fight in September at all, but Floyd's team says he will.
- Berto is an option as Mayweather's next fight.
- Arum says Bradley will fight again this year. Probably not a Vargas rematch. Possibly a fight with Ali on the Dubai card.
- Vargas is undecided if he will fight at 140 or 147 going forward.
- Arum and ODH say they are looking to litigate, not settle with Haymon. Having two lawsuits (even if they are the same) makes life harder on Haymon - more money and time.
- Nonito and his wife are really nice people.
- Floyd has until 4:30 ET on Friday to decide whether he wants the WBO belts. No inside info, but thinks he will vacate.
- RJJ continues to fight because he enjoys it and he needs the money.
- Thomas & Mack Center is doing a $70 million renovation that is scheduled to be done in September, so it would be ready for Cotto-Canelo.
- Spoke with ODH this week and even though he contemplated returning to the ring, ODH believes he did the right thing by not doing so.
- Chocolatito will return in the fall, date is up in the air. Could be on Arum's Sept. 26 PPV or possibly GGG's next card.
- Andre Ward is planning to fight again this year. No idea on potential opponents.
- Brook vs. Rios is close in negotiations. Arguing over some language, particularly Brook's rematch clause.
- If Brook vs. Rios cannot get made, TR says they are talking with Provodnikov as a backup (for Rios).
- Valdez looked good, but has a ways to go. His next fight is supposed to be on the Sept. 26 PPV.
- Who would Arum like to have on his Sept. 26 card (price expected to be $45)? Gilberto Ramirez, Oscar Valdez, possibly Jose Zepeda (if he wins his next fight), and possibly Roman Gonzalez.
- Danny Jacobs is as nice a guy you will meet.
- Would love a Maidana-Khan rematch.
- Demetrius Andrade has talked about fighting in Conneticut on August 15 (same card as RJJ), but the money is not worked out yet.
- Gives Bradley props for suggesting a fight vs. GGG, but it will not happen. Not much fan demand and too big of a mismatch, does not think HBO would endorse the fight.
- Believes Fury vs. Klitschko will happen this fall. Purse bid is Monday. Would be surprised if Haymon won.
- Harder puncher: Ann Wolfe or Paulie Malignaggi? Wolfe.
- Tarver vs. Cunningham on August 14. No location yet.
- Tim Bradley is one of the best fighters of the last decade.
- No chance of Chocolatito vs. Rigo.
- Matthysse vs. Crawford looms in the future as they will be mandatories (assuming they win).
- Cotto and Canelo settled to fight at 155 lbs. The date will be either Nov. 7 (MGM Grand) or Nov. 21 (T&M - Wynn would be host casino).
- Cotto vs. Canelo should be officially announced this month with a likely 5-6 city promotional tour in August.
- Cotto and Canelo will be paying GGG step aside money (he is the mandatory). It has been agreed to, but not finalized.
- Does not think Cotto-Canelo quite does 1 million PPV buys.
- Mares and LSC will be fighting next. Possibly August 29 or in September.
- Thinks that Manny won 22 of the 24 rounds vs. Tim Bradley.
- TR's lawsuit vs. Haymon virtually guarantees that Mayweather-Pacquiao 2 does not happen.
- Froch in the HOF? Leans towards yes. He fought everyone and was not afraid to travel.
- Wlad vs. Vitali? Vitali.
- Broner does not need a new trainer, Stafford is a good trainer. He needs a new attitude and commitment.
- Originally said winner of Mayweather-Pacquiao will be FOY. Now believes that Mayweather is not guaranteed to get it.
- Nothing on who Crawford will fight in the fall, but one possibility is Antonio Orozco.
- Arums says Crawford will fight once more this year and 3 times next year.
- Very possible we see Crawford vs. Pacquiao in 2016.
- Believes we eventually see Ward vs. GGG, but thinks it is a few fights away.
- Matthysse vs. Provodnikov is FOTY so far.
- Does not want to see Broner vs. Algieri.
- Does not think Manny's shoulder affected the outcome of the fight vs. Mayweather. Healthy or not, Mayweather wins.
- Hamed vs. JMM in 1999? JMM is such a good counter puncher that he potentially could have KO'd Hamed.
- Now that Bradley has a belt again, could see JMM trying to return and take a rematch.
- TruTV's boxing presentation is excellent. HBO is heavily involved.
- If Gatti could be placed to fight one fighter today, who would he want to see him fight? Maidana.
- The 4.4 million PPV buys for Mayweather-Pacquiao guarantees that Mayweather's contract with Showtime ended up being financially beneficial.
- No big names available for GGG. He will fight the best opponent available, no one big available for fall.
- Tureano Johnson still possible as a GGG opponent. He was ordered to do an eliminator for Lemiuex's belt. He could turn it down and fight for another belt (GGG).
