Dan Rafael chat wrap 6/26:
- Bradley vs. Vargas? Gone back and forth, likes Vargas' height and confidence. Bradley in a close, tough decision. Nobody can match his determination.
- Who is next for GGG? Not Canelo or Cotto, Lemiuex and Lee will fight mandatories, Froch doesn't really want the fight, will not be Ward, heard rumors of a Hopkins matchup - but thinks they aren't true because it doesn't make any sense, so guessing it will be a guy like Tureano Johnson.
- Brook vs. Rios is not done yet, per TR. Won't matter if it is on the Sept. 12th with Floyd. Because it would be in the UK, HBO would show it during the day and Floyd would be on in prime time.
- Thinks Tony Weeks is one of the few great referees in boxing, but had an off night with Porter-Broner. He let Broner get away with too many fouls. Should have had a point taken long before the 11th round.
- His take on Broner: at 130 and 135 Broner was broke and hungry, fought like such. At 140 and 147, he has had money and hasn't shown the same hunger. Also, his power isn't as good at the heigher weight classes. Broner has enormous talent and he needs to focus on boxing and not all the outside distractions. Doesn't think he will do that.
- Clevery vs. Fonfara? Good fight, not much meaning.
- Prefers ODH stay retired and Floyd fight a better opponent (regarding rumors of Floyd-ODH 2).
- Gate of Bradley-Vargas vs. Broner-Porter? The crowd for Bradley-Vargas will be smaller, but they also will have given away less free tickets.
- Classy of Ward to give back the overweight penalty. Remembers that Canelo did the same vs. Baldomir.
- Chances of Bradley vs. GGG? Zero.
- Does not believe that ODH is pushing off Lemiuex-GGG so Oscar can fight GGG.
- ODH would make $50 million if he fought GGG? Probably less, but not really that far off.
- ODH beating GGG (now) would be a bigger upset than Douglas-Tyson? Yes.
- Ward will not fight GGG or a 175 lb champion this year.
- No rematch clause between Broner-Porter. Hasn't heard anything imminent.
- Floyd deserves to fight whoever he wants. Fans have the right to buy/not buy and criticize/praise his opponent.
- Does not want to see Berto or Mayfield as Mayweather opponents.
- Expect to see Wilder back in September, very likely vs. Arreola if he wins.
- Lucas Browne vs. Wilder? Possible, but not likely.
- Provodnikov is still trying to secure a fall HBO date. If he can't he will fight in Russia. Personally prefers to see Prov-Crawford, neither has an opponent lined up.
- Lara vs. GGG will not happen because it is a bad fight and PBC fighers are not welcome on HBO.
- Buy or Sell: when his suspension is up Schaefer becomes PBC's in house promoter? Buy.
- Postol vs. Matthysse is a very interesting style matchup.
- Thinks Bradley vs. Crawford is a potential fight that could happen.
- Wade vs. Soliman? Wade.
- Definitely thinks Mares vs. LSC happens in August or September.
- Sammy Vasquez makes fun fights, not sure he is top contender talent, but likely will get a shot because he is with Haymon.
- Last fighter who reminded him of GGG (missed a lot of talent in their primes and couldn't get big names to fight them)? Paul Williams.
- Wlad and Fury are still negotiating. No rush. Probably takes place this fall.
- Wilder vs. Povetkin will be ordered to negotiate starting in October.
- Arum is very serious about doing a Mexico City PPV.
- Arum has talked about a Crawford-Pacquiao fight. Could happen next year.
- Verdejo's surgery went fine and was nothing serious (bone spurs). Some healing time and he will be back soon.
- Arum said Walters-Lomachenko will not get made because Loma only wanted it for the belts.
- IBF 135 lb belt vacant (Bey). Shafikov vs. Barthelemy ordered. Bey was stripped of the title, his guess is because Bey refused to make the Shafikov fight (again).
- DeMarco will be missed. The Linares fight was a great comeback.
- Too early to say if PBC's business plan will work or not. They are 3 months into a 2.5 year plan.
- For HBO's 1,000th fight they will open with a 4 minute tribute to their 1,000 fights.
- On paper the best fights tonight are on TruTV.
- Valdez and Verdejo never faced in the amateurs. Both fought Lomachenko in the amateurs and lost.
- Manny Pacquiao has had the most lineal titles: 108, 126, 130, and 140.
