Floyd Mayweather News: Following Manny Pacquiao Fight, Floyd's Next Opponent Could Be Keith Thurman

Following his win against Manny Pacquiao in May, welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather has found himself in a curious situation. A rematch against the Filipino icon would have made perfect sense considering the record-breaking financial figures of the first fight, but Pacquiao's shoulder injury prevents another mega-fight from happening in 2015. Now Mayweather is in search of his next challenger and the candidates don't look nearly as promising.

The welterweight division is littered with talent, but Mayweather's September fight plans were expected to include a high-profile opponent in what could be his last fight. Amir Khan was thought to be the most logical opponent for Mayweather, but Khan provided a less-than-inspiring performance in a win against Chris Algieri on May 29.

The one boxer who might garner some interest is Keith Thurman. The 26-year-old defeated Robert Guerrero in March, and will be fighting Luis Collazo in July. Should Thurman win convincingly he could perhaps get a shot at the champion. He told On the Ropes Boxing Radio that he wants a shot a Mayweather.

"We're definitely in line for the Mayweather shot," Thurman said. "We've been in line for the Mayweather shot for a minute but it doesn't matter who I fight in the welterweight division.

"I would love Floyd Mayweather. He's the man. Until the man retires, he's the man.

"I want to be a legend and the best way to become a legend is by taking out a legend, and that would be Floyd Mayweather."

While Thurman is undefeated, it's possible that Mayweather may consider a boxer with more drawing power to boost pay-per-view sales. English star Kell Brook also has an undefeated record, and could generate strong interest because of his British fanbase. Brook also made a name for himself by defeating highly regarded Shawn Porter.

But either Thurman or Brook would be a financial letdown for Mayweather in what could be the last fight of his career. The consensus opinion is that a fight against a Mexican boxer would bring about a great deal of interest, but there is no available elite Mexican boxer in the division. Canelo Alvarez, who Mayweather defeated in 2013, is reportedly interested in fighting Miguel Cotto.

Mayweather is looking to finish his career as an undefeated champion. He has a 48-0 record, and is a win away from tying heavyweight champion Rocky Marciano's illustrious 49-0 record.

Floyd Mayweather is already trading shots with Gennady Golovkin ... telling TMZ Sports the guy's just running his mouth for a payday -- and he's way out of his league.

Golovkin -- who's knocked out his last 20 opponents -- told us Mayweather would be his "dream fight" and is 100% certain he'd win if they ever got in the ring together.

Now, Mayweather's camp is issuing a response ... saying, "Everyone in boxing wants to fight Floyd. It's the biggest payday they could possibly have."

"[Golovkin] has never fought a top opponent in his whole career ... we're surprised you guys would even have him on your show to be honest."

Sounds like fightin' words.

new podcast: we basically say that @patscorpio is the black Jim Lampley and predict BET commentating crew

you keep saying wilder is all wrong for povetkin like he has improved. he lets guys dig into his body too easily with hooks n uppercuts. backing up straight in a line with his chin up would be deadly vs povetkin .

also if povetkin hurts him, he'll try to swarm him while molina didnt do much to follow up.

yes, technically wilder attributes(height, reach) and power are all wrong for povetkin but only if he was on the skill level of a bowe,lewis,wlad....etc.

just being tall with power aint gonna cut it...ask michael white, michael grant, Nikolai Valuev who all got beat by smaller guys before.

i know but when he was focused he whipped srl ass. srl caught him off guard in the rematch cause he was partying so much and overweight celebrating his win.

but yeah that breh shouldn't have quit.
The partying definitely played a role in that loss, but the several (different) excuses Duran came up with is sickening. If he would've said something along the lines of, "The better man won tonight," then I'd have more respect for him. Of course, we could say he beat himself (in a way, he did beat himself), but let's not discredit SRL's win. He put on a boxing clinic. One man came prepared, one man didn't. Whose fault is that? Hell, I can argue that SRL beat himself in their 1st fight, based on the fact that he didn't fight his fight (as a mover, etc...). Instead, he chose to fight flat-footed and toe-to-toe, but that doesn't give me the right to discredit Duran's win. SRL's win got overshadowed, 'cause Roberto was on his period.

Sidenote: SRL did admit that he was intimidated by Duran going into their 1st fight, though. Dude had him shook :damn:.

Wilders height actually hinders him with his shytty footwork. Reality all you have to slip his jab while advancing and boom his whole body is there to be hit. He's literally not improved at all. Tall good 1-2 with powers that's it/

I don't think he's a danger to Floyd..he would have to come down..and he wouldn't be the guy knocking people out in his last 20 fights if he lost that strength against someone that quick.
