Showtime, after televising last weekend's heavyweight title tilt between Deontay Wilder and Bermane Stiverne, has no other 'Showtime Championship Boxing' telecasts scheduled for the time being. But their Executive V.P., GM of Showtime Sports and Event Programming, Stephen Espinoza says that rest assured, other events will be put on their itinerary.
"Unfortunately, I can't go into a lot of details about it now, till we make some announcements but we've got a couple of moving pieces that we're trying to sync up to be able to announce several events at the same time," Espinoza said to BoxingScene.com on Saturday afternoon.
"So it may look like there's no activity and nothing going on but it'll become apparent pretty quickly what the plan is going forward and what we have scheduled in the year term."
But don't expect any Showtime Championship Boxing telecasts in the upcoming month.
"Probably not in February, we're probably a little too late in the calendar for that," admitted Espinoza. "But I do anticipate one in March, for sure." Espinoza believes that when it's all said and done, they will have the same amount of boxing cards as they did in previous years.
When asked if any fighters advised by Al Haymon - many of whom are already slated to appear on NBC and now SPIKE - would be on these cards, Espinoza answered:
"Absolutely, we expect many of those fighters that appear on those networks to be returning to Showtime immediately. I know that the network boxing opportunity is a new development, recently. But if you go back a little bit further, it wouldn't be unusual for fighters to appear on a variety of networks.
"So I think it's actually a good thing for the development of the sport, a good thing for the development of the fighters and a good thing for Showtime and it raises the profile of the guys who are regularly featured on Showtime."
