BoxingScene.com first reported on Wednesday that former three division world champion Miguel Cotto (37-4, 30KOs) is possibly going to return to HBO. Cotto's last fight, in December, was televised on Showtime against Austin Trout. The Puero Rican star was going to return to Showtime on September 28th at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, but Showtime rejected Cornelius "K9" Bundrage as a potential opponent.
Cotto, who became a free agent on December 31, 2011 after spending his entire career with Top Rank, had his last two bouts co-promoted by Golden Boy Promotions. There is heavy talk that Top Rank could be co-promoting Cotto's return.
There is now a tentative date being rumored of October 5th, on HBO, and Carlos Molina (21-5-2, 6KOs) is being discussed as the potential opponent, according to Carlos Narvaez. Molina was going to fight IBF champion Ishe Smith in two weeks on Showtime. The fight was canceled after Smith sustained a bad cut over his eye in sparring.
Another circulating rumor is that trainer Freddie Roach will replace Pedro Diaz as the lead voice in Cotto's corner. That will be an interesting situation, since Alexander Povetkin's team recently announced that Roach would be training him for the fight with heavyweight king Wladimir Klitschko, and fight takes on the exact same day, October 5th, in Moscow, Russia.
