WBO, IBF, WBA, IBO heavyweight champion Oleksandr Usyk has a lot of options to consider in 2023.
He saw action once in 2022, when he retained his unified crown with a hard-fought twelve round decision win over Anthony Joshua.
The main option would be an undisputed fight with WBC world champion Tyson Fury - provided Fury overcomes voluntary challenger Derek Chisora on December 3.
Usyk's assistant trainer, Sergey Lapin, says Fury is at the top of their list.
"Usyk has already recovered from the fight with Anthony Joshua, he's keeping himself in shape and is currently engaged in charity work. He's also waiting for the chatterbox Tyson Fury to finally have the courage to enter the ring with him. In the meantime Fury fights Derek Chisora. This is not an interesting fight, who will like this fight? Tyson is looking for easy fights," Lapin told Lord Ping.
Another possible option is former WBC world champion Deontay Wilder, who two weeks ago returned to the ring with a first round demolition of Robert Helenius.
"Deontay Wilder is a name that's been mentioned. Usyk does not fear Wilder. From Wilder's last fight, I didn't see anything new. This guy is very simple. He goes out and hits and he has a very strong punch. He compensates for his lack of technique," Lapin said.
In past interviews, Usyk has toyed around with the idea of returning to the cruiserweight division - where in 2018 the unbeaten boxer became the undisputed champion.
Lapin indicates that Usyk would only drop back for a showdown with Mexican superstar Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez, who several times expressed interest in fighting Usyk at a catch-weight.
"Next year, the fight for the title of undisputed world champion against Tyson Fury is our priority. This is the main goal. But if this does not happen for whatever reason, then I hope that there will still be some very interesting fights ahead. Oleksandr could, for example, return to the cruiserweight division but only if he has a fight with Saul Alvarez. That's the only fighter that Usyk would come back down to cruiserweight for," Lapin said.
