Rolando Romero: I'm Moving Up To 147 Pounds To F--- Up Spence – I'm A Star!

BY MANOUK AKOPYAN
Published Tue Jul 19, 2022, 09:23 AM EDT
Rolando Romero has remarkable plans for himself.

Following a sixth-round knockout loss to Gervonta Davis in a lightweight fight in May, Romero (14-1, 12 KOs) wants to jump up two weight classes to challenge WBC, WBA, and IBF welterweight champion Errol Spence Jr.

“I want Errol Spence Jr. at 147 pounds. I'm moving up. I'm a big 135-pounder. I don't give two f--- about 140 pounds. It's a no-name ass division. I want Spence at 147. I'ma f--- him up. That googly-eyed ass motherf----- – and he ugly as f---,” Romero told FightHype.com.

The 26-year-old Romero’s confidence is still reigning supreme despite suffering his first career loss.

The 5-foot 8-inch Romero has fought exclusively between 132 to 138 pounds ever since turning pro in 2016.

A fight that would more sense than Spence for the Las Vegas-based Romero is a fight with the Texan’s lightweight understudy, Frank Martin (16-0, 12 KOs).

“I don't give a f--- about Frank Martin,” said Romero. “I don't have any problems with Frank Martin. I just like him as a person. Me and him are cool. We've sparred. He's a great fighter. But honestly, I'm a f---ing star and I'm going to go fight another f---ing star, and I want Errol Spence … f--- that sh!t. I'm going after the big fish. I'm moving up to 147.”

Following Martin's 10th-round TKO win against Jackson Marinez -- who arguably beat Romero in 2020 but failed to get a decision on the cards -- Spence said Martin would definitely beat Rolly because he's just a better overall fighter.

“He stopped [Marinez] like he supposed to do, in impressive fashion and done something Rolly didn’t do,” said Spence. “And I don’t think that’s even a logical question to ask him – is he ready for Rolly? Because I don’t think you can name an opponent Rolly beat. So, you know, I mean, he only fought Tank.

“So, I definitely think he’s ready for Rolly. He’ll definitely beat Rolly. He’s just a better fighter than Rolly overall. You know, that’s a fight I think can definitely happen, especially with Rolly coming off a loss and, you know, he need the fight to get back in the mix. So, why not fight Frank Martin?”

Andy Ruiz on Reynoso: 'Eddy is Not Gonna Be In This Camp, But In the Future I'm Sure He Is'

BY SEAN NAM

Andy Ruiz has apparently not ruled out the idea of working again with esteemed trainer Eddy Reynoso.

The former heavyweight champion from Imperial, California is preparing for his pay-per-view fight with contender Luis Ortiz of Cuba on Sept. 4 at crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, but he will do so without Reynoso, best known as the trainer of Canelo Alvarez.

Ruiz parted ways with Reynoso earlier this year, opting to train under Alfredo Osuna.

Ruiz has not been alone in his defection from the Reynoso camp. Widely regarded as one of the sport’s top trainers, Reynoso, who runs a gym in San Diego, has seen his stable thin in recent months. Most notably, lightweight Ryan Garcia left Reynoso, followed by heavyweight Frank Sanchez.

While Reynoso may have something of an icy relationship with Garcia, who has been engaged in something of a war of words with Alvarez in recent days, Ruiz made it clear in a recent interview that he thinks highly of his former trainer–enough, apparently to float the possibility that they may work together down the line.

“I know Eddie’s not gonna be in this camp, but in the future I’m sure he is,” Ruiz told FightHype.com. “He’s really a good guy, nice guy, who really helped me out a lot.”

“I appreciate every single trainer that I’ve had,” continued Ruiz, who has been trained by Manny Robles in the past. “I’ve learned from all of them.”

Ruiz has fought only once since coming up short against Anthony Joshua in their heavyweight title rematch in Saudi Arabia in 2019. Ruiz fought veteran Chris Arreola last May, winning a 12-round unanimous decision at Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, California.

Ruiz (34-2, 22 KOs) expects his bout with the southpaw Ortiz (33-2, 28 KOs) to be a come-forward affair.

“The main thing is to just training hard, bro,” Ruiz said. “Training hard and being cautious, throwing my combinations, covering up, making him miss, making him pay. Just a lot of stuff like that.

“We just gotta be smart. If we’re gonna be aggressive, we got be smart and pick our shots. And if we’re gonna be punching around, counter punching and using speed and explosiveness. Luis Ortiz comes forward and I come forward so I’m pretty sure there’s gonna be a lot of bombs thrown.”

i mean if GGG becomes undisputed at 168 im sure he will give up those middleweight belts

and Lara would prolly be upgraded once again as a legit world champ :hhh:

if he draws or loses to Canelo..GGG vs a 39 (in american years) Lara to merge another gamestop belt..interesting
