Gervonta Davis-Rolando Romero Fight To Be Rescheduled For June 4 On Showtime PPV

Rolando Romero will get his shot at Gervonta Davis almost six months to the day later than he expected.

BoxingScene.com has learned that Mayweather Promotions and Premier Boxing Champions are in the process of finalizing a deal for the lightweight title bout between Davis and Romero to be rescheduled. Barring any unforeseen obstacles, they’ll headline a Showtime Pay-Per-View event June 4 at a venue to be determined.

Baltimore’s Davis (26-0, 24 KOs) and Romero (14-0, 12 KOs), of North Las Vegas, Nevada, were supposed to meet December 5 at Staples Center in Los Angeles. Mexican contender Isaac Cruz replaced Romero on five weeks’ notice because a woman with whom Romero was acquainted accused him of sexually assaulting her sometime during the fall of 2019.

She filed a police report late in October in Henderson, Nevada. The incident was investigated, but charges were not filed against Romero.

Though there are other lightweights that fans want Davis to fight, Mayweather Promotions represents Romero as well. Floyd Mayweather and his company’s CEO, Leonard Ellerbe, have decided to reschedule Romero’s shot at Davis in part because Romero was removed from a fight for which the hard-hitting contender had already signed a bout agreement and attended a press conference October 21 in Los Angeles.

The 26-year-old Romero remained the WBA’s number one contender for Davis’ secondary WBA 135-pound championship throughout the time of the aforementioned sexual assault investigation.

Davis defeated Cruz by unanimous decision, but the powerful southpaw’s rugged challenger provided Davis’ toughest test in 26 professional fights. The 27-year-old Davis had knocked out 16 straight opponents prior to going the 12-round distance with Cruz (22-2-1, 15 KOs), who will face Cuban veteran Yuriorkis Gamboa (30-4, 18 KOs) in a 12-rounder on the Errol Spence Jr.-Yordenis Ugas undercard April 16 at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.

Davis worsened an existing injury to his left hand when he fought Cruz, but it required rest, not surgery. Avoiding a procedure on his dominant hand will allow the three-division champion to return to the ring sooner.

Lacy’s corner probably should have stopped it in the late rounds. Lacy’s defensive flaws had been on display in earlier fights (Sheika, Rubin) but he was better than Calzaghe made him look. Definitely didn’t expect a 12-0 beatdown. His shoulder injuries and drop in confidence fukked him up after this fight.

I think 1995 was the last year Whitaker was really Sweet Pea. I mean, I guess he turned back the clock (trained harder and cut back on the coke) to put on a defensive clinic against Oscar in 97, but he declined quite a bit after 95’.

I wish he and Tito had fought in 95’. It would have been a better matchup then. When Tyson got out in 95’, Tito took a backseat to him and King underpromoted him. Tito kind of wasted away from 95-98 after a strong 94’.

agree with sweet pea but he was still fighting high level but was getting caught more...the oscar fight was prolly the last of anything prime

agree with tito...shyt he holds the record for 147 defenses...i would too if in a 3 year period if my highest profile fight was against freddie pendleton ..but no one like to bring that up
