Farmer Slams Diaz: How The F*** You Gonna Fight In September?
By Jake Donovan
Tevin Farmer doesn’t understand what more he can do to get Joseph Diaz Jr. in the ring.
The reigning super featherweight titlist cleared the second of back-to-back mandatory challengers off his plate following a landslide points win over France’s Guillaume Frenois in July. The win freed up the born-and-bred Philadelphia (Pa.) southpaw to fight whomever he pleases for his next outing, which he hopes to take place this fall.
He also hoped for it to come against California’s Diaz (29-1, 15KOs), a 2012 U.S. Olympian and perennial Top 10 contender who is in position to once again challenge for a major title.
That is, until he decided that he has other plans. The 26-year old revealed through social media of his intentions to fight Sept. 21, though not mentioning a location or opponent other than being “one step closer to fighting the CHUMP… I mean champ Tevin Farmer.”
From the other side, it seems like an unnecessary step when you’ve already been offered a direct invitation to attend the party.
“I thought we’d be fighting JoJo Diaz in November,” Farmer (30-4-1, 6KOs) told BoxingScene.com, still taken aback by the events which have followed his offer. “I told him I’d fight him next in November. So how the f*** you gonna decide you now fighting in September? I don’t get it.”
Farmer has emerged as among the sport’s most active major titlists. From his title winning effort over Billy Dib last August, the 29-year old has already fought five times in a span of just under a year, with all four successful title defenses streaming live on DAZN.
Following his previous win over then-unbeaten Jono Carroll in March, Farmer and his team—including co-promoters Lou DiBella and Eddie Hearn, the latter with whom Farmer is no longer under contract but will likely continue to do business moving forward—made a lucrative offer for unbeaten 130-pound titlist Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis to come to DAZN for a unification bout later this year.
The offer wasn’t enough to entice Davis and Mayweather Promotions to pull him away from Showtime, which has housed his last six fights. Nor was a recent offer from Davis’ side enough to pique Farmer’s interest, which leaves both without opponents for what appears to be planned separate fights later this year rather than settle a rivalry more than five years in the making.
That led back to Farmer revisiting business with Diaz, another super featherweight with whom he’s enjoyed spirited conversations outside the ring. For now, he’s also another boxer in the division he can’t quite get in the ring.
“Diaz and (Golden Boy Promotions) acting like he’s the champ, that he’s the money and I gotta go chase him,” Farmer states. “I got the belt, I got the November date and we offered it to him already. So if it ain’t him… I don’t have no mandatories since I got them out the way, so I can fight whoever I want.
“I’m not gonna worry about these guys that don’t want to fight me. If it ain’t gonna be JoJo Diaz or Gervonta Davis, we’ll just find someone who want the fight.”
