Jose Benavidez Arrested For Alleged Street Racing
According to a report by TMZ Sports, welterweight contender Jose Benavidez was arrested Saturday night in Maricopa County, where he was taken in and booked for one count of misdemeanor racing/exhibition of speed and one count of driving with a suspended or revoked license, which is also a misdemeanor.
The exact circumstances around his arrest remain unclear.
Benavidez was scheduled to face former world champion Luis Collazo in a main event bout on ESPN on August 17, but the contest was posted when Benavidez recently suffered an injury to his leg. The fight is going to be rescheduled to a later point in the year.
Benavidez was last seen in action back in October, when he suffered his first career defeat at the hands of WBO welterweight champion Terence Crawford, who pulled off a knockout win in the twelfth and final round. While Benavidez was competitive at times, he appeared to be plagued during the bout by a lingering leg injury - which stems from an incident in 2016, when the boxer was walking his dog and was shot in the leg by an unknown assailant.
