That was the crazy thing. He's an oddity because even with heavyweights he would fight inside. Against Peter he wasn't in his best shape but he still baffled him in the 1st. Pete had his number in the 2nd. He ballooned up a ton in part because he never really liked doing conditioning and his sparring was his workout. Holyfield was discombobulated against him
Conditioning is not the reason why Toney balloned up like that. Toney looked like he did due to thyroid problems and damage to his pituitary gland that severely affected his testosterone and HGH production. If you're ever close up on Toney, when he's not suited and booted, look real hard and you can see a thin little line across his throat that's a tell-tale sign of partial thyroid removal. My mother had the same surgery in her mid-40s. She used to have debilitating migraines, since she was a teen, and extreme weight gain as an adult due to an overactive thyroid.
the rahman and the peter fights..im fully convinced those are where he got kinda broken..an all time great chin but he was never meant to take blows from heavyweights like that...he really did take some shots from those 2
Toney had TBI way before those fights. I noticed Toney had a "heavy tongue" as far back as the Hembrick fight during his post-fight interview. Bill Miller warned him (originally wanted Toney to retire before he turned 30 and put his foot down after the Griffin loss). Toney didn't listen, fired Miller and hired Ronnie Shields.

On a side note, as long as I live, I'll never forget the name Anthony Hembrick. My first televised fight that I attended as a kid was Hembrick vs. Booker T. Word. My dad and I still crack up about that fight to this day.
