Ave is basically a trap battle imo (for top tiers).

To me Ave is similar to a Todd, in the sense that I don’t think guys are really excited about battling him. As a result, it could turn out to be a bad battle. The difference between the two is Ave wins these battles while Todd has debatables.

Ave had a period where he was winning battles due to his opponents having poor preparation or just weak material. That’s not his fault, but I do feel it just shows that his peers don’t view him as a high threat. It’s understandable, as he’s just a real monotone punchline guy. He’s nowhere as dynamic as a Rum Nitty, who tends to get a real good version of whoever he battles.

I know there’s some real huge fans of Ave on here, but just look at what I’m saying objectively. I’m not saying he’s a bad battler. He’s just not a guy people get it for (specifically top tiers).

All the OTHER artists on those DVDs who weren't battling... what were they on there doing?

Promoting themselves & telling their story. Then maybe doing some sort of exclusive freestyle or music video. I kinda understand your frustration, but if you're from the DVD era you shouldn't have that much of an issue with storylines.

When I would watch old battles I ALWAYS paid attention to the people standing behind the battler. It gives you an idea of their lifestyle. That helps sell the characters, especially when you can tell their homies aren't battle rap fans. It may become annoying to you when the fans parrot talking points that have nothing to do with talent, but it's important that the mc's are concerned with branding themselves. There are too many talented rappers, and some of these guys sound similar. Fire Da Misfit is nice, but he sounds lot like Reign Man imo & he hasn't done much to differentiate himself so I don't rush to his battles. I know a bunch of talented rappers who get no light because they have no idea how to sell themselves.
I don’t have a problem with a storyline.
I have a problem with nikkas bein more focused on storylines than talent.

You got nikkas like Ace Amin focusing way more on talkin (creating storylines) than his actual talent.

On the flip side of that, SWAMP is a nikka that does it the RIGHT way.
He focuses on his talent and does the talkin as an extra.

nikkas just have an unhealthy fascination with “stories”

the reason why they don’t sell is because SMACK never properly focused on rewarding talent.
I love SMACK, but It’s the raw truth and I’m not goin back and forth about that either.

I remember nikkas slandering Chilla for bein boring and all of that, meanwhile he birth a whole generation sounding like him.
Cornballs like Norbes slandering that man, instead of letting him figuring out how to be more exciting to ADHD cornballs entering the fandom.

meanwhile Norbes kept babying Chess FOR YEARS during his fukk ups “because of his story”

Shyt is hypocritical, shyt is weak and shyt is corny

During the DVD era I watched the nikkas that RAPPED, the crowd was just extra.

same thing with Jc vs Chilla, them nikkas were spitting A-1 material.

Let’s be clear here, I never said promotion isn’t important.
I’m sayin the art is more important than that.

Lux and Verb were the most entertaining to me, but because they were NICE first.
not because of whoever was standing behind them.
ICE was a nikka where his bars resonated because of his authenticity, but he was still NICE.

Let’s not act like DOT wasn’t pushed HEAVY while other way more talented battlers were unfairly ignored.

I know you know what I’m talkin about.

I’m just sick of all the talkin these clowns be on.

Just fukkin RAP and keep it moving you lame ass nikkas
NUNNA y’all gon do shyt.
All y’all gon do is rap and shake hands after the battle, I don’t believe ANY of y’all

We watched this happen recently with REX vs Roc.

Shyt is WACK.

@Diyhai nikkas couldn’t come outside for weeks / months if they lost, c’mon now

You might be on to something

Clips spit some of the worst shyt I ever heard from him. nikka had better material for fukkin Phara Funeral than Ave.

Math had the GLOAT campaign leading up to Ave, battled Ave and choked all 3 rounds, then went right back to cooking against other comp.

Ars was in full filler mode for Ave but turned up for Geechi/Twork/Chess

Ave really might just be a check for these legend-tier nikkas

@ReasonableMatic you in here preaching the gospel bro. This “storyline” nonsense is out of hand. Its why guys like Surf are comfortable showing up to every battle with only two rounds, flagrantly BRAGGING about it, yet still is one of the highest paid. It’s why Twork is writing 6 hours before battles, recycling bars, yet still is one of the most popular guys.

No order, no respect for the culture. It’s pathetic.

Chilla ain't no damn victim. Calling him boring isn't slanderous, slander has to be false. He is an influential figure in battle rap, but he's not particularly engaging. If he was, he would be a mainstage mainstay. I went to NOME 3, he had the least stage presence of anyone who touched the stage. He was one of the people on the card that I thought would really kill it, but it just didn't come together.

Now Smack has different types of events, so If he continues to do well he will get everything you believe he deserves. Norbes isn't the reason why Chess is way more popular though.

Besides if you like Chilla & Swamp that much why are you mad today?

I clearly talked about the unhealthy fascination with storylines from the fan and battler’s side and how it ruins the quality in battlerap and gave examples

Nunna that has anything to do with me knowing storylines happen in sports / entertainment regardless.
Ofcourse, that’s just common sense smh
Are y’all fukkin serious brehs? Lmao

Storylines are literally made in every fukking sport :snoop: why tf yall thought battlerap was gonna be different,

Strawman argument you’re making. Saying that storylines shouldn’t take precedent over the actual quality of battle performance is not saying storylines shouldn’t exist at all. Stop reaching.
