You saying you from the midwest...so you saying nikkas in your city grew up talking hip hop but had no idea who Big L was? :wow:

That’s correct

East coast music wasn’t even played like that growing up. It was more west coast and down south.

in fact, a lot of Bay Area artist like C-Bo, Marvaless, brotha lynch, killa tay, e-40, etc.

is it starting to make sense now? Do you think nyggas that only care about what bumps give a fukk about a Big l?

I feel you...cause on the flipside, I be cofused when tons of east coast nikkas dont know Mac or Fiend from No Limit when they were bigger than L in the midwest

nah not really

You guys have to remember that hip hop is bigger then just NY. He was really just a local rapper. I don’t understand how y’all aren’t getting that.
You're understating Big L's popularity in an effort to try to make a regional point about New York. If you were talking Saigon it would be more appropriate.

Battle Truth is still a nikka that be on the internet. He’s a blogger. It is surprising if he really doesn’t know who Big L is

It seems odd, because you’d think a battle rap fan would naturally know who big L is, but y’all gotta realize Battle Truth is a Midwest nygga.

I can completely understand how he’s never heard of him.

I don’t think BT is an internet nygga like that, and you sort to have to be one to have had any exposure to someone like Big L unless you’re from the east coast.

To a degree its true. However, its still kinda crazy considering that Big L did get his name out beyond just the east coast. Down south where i was at, I knew a few people that knew who he was because "MVP" and "Put It On" was getting heavy burn on Rap City and Yo! MTV Raps before the internet was poppin' like that for artists. Just sayin'....

Big L is a hip hop legend. Do your homework.

I feel like anybody who covers HipHop should know the History.. Aint like Big l was some underground dude.. He was well known..
Smh@BT

Yep. He got his name out.

big l was an underground dude though. Let’s not rewrite history here. I’m from the Midwest/South. He got no play in the streets. He got no radio play. His music videos were never on tv. How was he not underground?

I don’t know it’s like me saying everyone should know who someone like Zro is because he’s well known, but in reality he is an underground artist. It doesn’t “feel” like it where I’m from, but he most definitely is overall.

You either gotta be from NY or just overestimate his popularity.

Even though he was more popular on the east that doesn't mean he didn't get his name out either to get recognition other places. I get what you mean by radio airplay and all that because down south, you right...you won't hear a Big L single. Unless it was the MVP remix with the RnB remix and that was always rare. At parties, a DJ would usually throw on "Ebonics" alot in mixes before they'd get to alot of the extra party songs. And it also depended where you were in the south. And like I said...BET was rotating his video like crazy. I remember and I went to school with nikkas who knew he was and we were down south.

Z-Ro is somewhat different tho. The reason why I say that is because you have to look at when Big L came out and the outreach he had. I knew about Z-Ro for a while but he for real came up when the internet was poppin' when it came to music.

Battle Truth not knowing Big L is pretty wild. Not knowing his songs or verses? Sure. I can see that. Never hearing of him before sounds nuts.

Even if it wasn't certain lyrics or songs, he definitely got some recognition. If we were just going by his freestyle with Jay-Z or anything else that didn't have a nationwide presence, I would agree with theflyest more.

Most people didn't know him until after he died I think. But I thought Battle Truth was saying he didn't know of him AT ALL.

If he saying he never heard of him period, then that's crazy:mindblown:

Funny thing about it is Mac is the type of rapper that these east coast nyggas would like, and they don’t even know him.

I feel there’s a lot of acts that probably have the exact same status of a big l but because they are from the west/south/Midwest, it wouldn’t be considered a big deal to these east coast nyggas. However, it’s all of a sudden crazy that some nygga from the Midwest has never heard of Big L.

I just don’t see what the big deal is. The streets didn’t even bump the more popular east coast acts the were known, so why the fukk would they know who Big L is?

I think y'all gotta put things in context

Dude is from the Midwest he was a street dude and did a long bid

I think it's not that crazy that he don't know Big L, nikkas who do long time really be out of the loop on a lot of stuff

Not the midwest part but I feel like if you went away for a while, that could happen. Pretty sure some east coast folks who had to do a sentence or so got transferred elsewhere in the states and missed out on some artists coming out.

I agree, but I’m taking it further that it’s not a big deal that he didn’t know him, even without the bid. Big L didn’t have reach like that. He was just a broke, local NY rapper who got shot.
