There are a few battle rappers that actually make music with substance. Verb is one of them. I feel like his music is solid and he doesn't really need to have an "It" factor because he's better than a lot of the rappers out here now being passed off as lyrical.

Yeah he's good from a technical sense. There's absolutely nothing wrong with his rhymes.

But there's also nothing about the way he stitched them together that makes me curious about what he's gonna say next. And that's the difference. He's just rappity rappin. There's a reason why battle rappers have that cliche that they can't make songs.

Only battle rapper that surprised me with his song making ability was Surf.

I mean it's aight, but it's funny how you listen to battle rappers on records and it becomes painfully clear why they can never make it in the actual music industry.

Imagine Ross on this beat. Then listen to Verb. Yeah, Verb rhymin his ass off, but he just doesn't have that "it" factor in his bars. They might even be more complex than Ross shyt, but they just not put together as compellingly.

He can work at it & get better.

Your comparing him to Ross, a guy that is a top tier hip hop artist. Not only that, this is a guy that took years to get to that point. It took Ross years to put it altogether.

Nah dawg, Verb prolly damn near 40 his damn self. You're naive if you think he ain't been rappin just as long as Ross has.

Most these battle rappers been in the game for a minute and hung around cats that sorta made it. Think Goodz, think Clips, Lux, Ice...all these nikkas hung around cats that sorta made it.

Verb is in his early 30s. Verb's focus has been battle rap. He can get better if he made music his primary focus.

It's worth noting that Verb has written for industry rappers. I think TI is his most notable placement. @FreshAIG can correct me if I'm wrong.

I don't think that's the reason. I think you're only saying that because you know he's a battle rapper. If you didn't know, you wouldn't assume he was one. Because nothing in his rhymes were battle rapper ish. The main problem they have is there's millions of rappers now. They still trying to get on the old fashioned way, and get someone to put them on. That shyt over with.

Not true, he sounds like any one of those nikkas who's demos you used to hear on soundclick.

He can rap, but he's just not interesting. What is it about him that makes him stand out from any of these other rappity rappin ass nikkas.

I used Ross as an example because even the very first time I heard that nikka my ears perked up. I didn't even know his name or that he was a former CO.

Saying he sounds amateur is fair but he doesn't sound like a battle rapper on the track. I just people use that as a fall back when they say a battle rapper can't make music. They say "he sounds like he's battling the beat" or "he's being rappity" even when it doesn't apply.

I don't have a lot of experience watching rappers record specifically, but with music on wax, the "it" factor is often a collaborative creation of the engineers, artists, studio, etc. You can see the aura fade when most artists perform live. Rappers seem especially exposed on stage.

Some of these battle rappers could have decent above ground success with a studio and resources.

You're completely right. I've seen tons of rappers perform and a lot of them are absolutely shyt in concert. The only rappers I can think of that I came away from their concerts with more respect for their artistry are Black Milk and Elzhi..they had live bands though.

If these battle rappers had the budget, producers & writers that most mainstream rappers have, we wouldn't be having this discussion. I've been in proper studio sessions and I've seen how much help rappers get.
