Guess he felt it wasn't necessary for Merlyn yet especially knowing she's Thea's dad. That's the real thing. He's put in a bind breh: he's already lied to his sister and that's driven them apart, now he's going to kill her dad after she just lost her mom?
The reason why Ollie is "protecting" Merlyn is of Thea. Ollie doesn't want her life in danger while in the middle of figuring out who killed Sara.
