New film announced at end of One Piece: Episode of Skypiea special on Saturday
The end of the two-hour One Piece: Episode of Skypiea (One Piece: Episode of Sorajima) anime special broadcast in Japan revealed on Saturday evening that One Piece is getting a new anime film that will open in Japan in summer 2019. The film will commemorate the TV anime's 20th anniversary, and will be the 14th film in the franchise.
Funimation, Crunchyroll, and AnimeLab will stream the One Piece: Episode of Skypieaspecial online.
This year's 39th issue of Shueisha's Weekly Shonen Jump magazine is additionally teasing on Monday that the magazine's 40th issue will have an "important announcement" for the One Piece anime when it ships on September 3. The 90th volume of Eiichiro Oda's One Piece mangawill ship on September 4, as well as the new Vivre Card: One Piece Zukan fanbook.
The latest anime film in the One Piecefranchise, One Piece Film Gold, opened in Japan in July 2016. Similarly, the One Piece Episode of Sabo two-hour special announced the film in August 2015. Funimation screened the film in theaters in the United States with an English dub in January 2017. The company then released the film on DVD and Blu-ray Disc in May 2017.
A One Piece film opened every year in Japan between 2000-2009. The 30-minute One Piece 3D: Mugiwara Chase film opened in March 2011, and the One Piece Film Z movie opened in December 2012.
