It plays into the fact that Japan used to be a very isolated, introverted nation.

Having said that, the only way I can see the Strawhats survive Wano is if they can get the country to revolt against the shogun and Kaido in favor of Momonosuke, which causes Kaido to fall back. But Oda rarely takes the most obvious route to an ending so who the fukk knows?
