He toook the wrong envelope. There are two of each. Duplicates on both sides of the stage. He took a best actress. Didn't check it. The right one was brought out by someone from PWC
Envelopes aren't released until right before the person hits the stage. They are set up separate from stage direction. So hence the dupes on both sides of the stage.
Beattys old ass didn't read the envelope he took.
OK, so here's my theory....
Best Actress was in the Best Picture envelope and vice versa, and Warren had the right card, wrong envelope. He thinks he's reading Best Actress...he's old and senile and hasn't been on screen in over a decade afterall...so when he opens it and sees Moonlight, he gets confused. Faye hardly looks at the card and was about to say Emma, but says La La Land. Emma says she had her card in her hand (the one with her name), and I believe they snatch the card from Warren and read it to say Moonlight.
Either way, someone will never work in Hollywood again.
