How do incentive longevity
Maybe reduce the number of pitchers you can use in one game
It has to be a smart organization that wakes up and says, "maybe it's more important to prioritize keeping these guys in one piece instead of churning through a new staff every three years."
That means reducing max effort pitches except for when needed, particularly later in games. Look for starters to go 6+ innings consistently and let them face lineups a third time. Don't be so quick to pull pitchers when they get in a little bit of trouble in the regular season. Feels like these teams are all managed like a pivotal playoff game instead of a mid-May matchup. Let these guys work through a rough patch.
These teams are always talking pitching and defense, right? Shortstops and center fielders are so overvalued because of their defense. Let pitchers throw to that then. There's a place for contact pitchers. Not everybody can be Gerrit Cole.
It doesn't seem like teams allow pitchers to throw based on the situation either. I definitely remember Verlander starts with Detroit where if he got an early lead, he wasn't throwing his best stuff the rest of the game. If he was spotted an early 6-7 run lead, he'd throw to contact, even if it meant giving up 5 runs just so he could eat up 7+ innings with the lead.
That kinda stuff isn't valued anymore. They always talk large sample sizes for data but they never have context.
