Alonso overplayed his hand.
The second you saw all this talk about teams chasing a 34 year old Christian Walker, you had to know that the market was soft for Alonso.
Guys like Walker, Goldschmidt and Santana sign for cheap, and Alonso thinks that helps the market for him?
Those guys signing lowered the market for Alonso. Pete should have been out the gate early and taken the biggest offer on the table. Maybe he would have gotten 150M or whatever. And that would have raised the floor and improved the contracts for Walker/Goldy but so what?
Now, Alonso will be lucky to get 100M.
What incentive do the Mets have to give him a big deal when Vlad's on the table in November?
I think the Mets are perfectly fine moving Vientos to 1B and telling Pete to kick rocks.
Who is Pete going to sign with?
The only team with any money that might need a 1B is the Padres, and that's looking like a shyt show.
