This team will and should be sold and moved soon.

"The Rays’ days in the Tampa area could now be numbered as the MLB club said Thursday they are not moving forward with a plan to build a $1.3 billion ballpark in St. Petersburg, Fla.

The franchise had a March 31 deadline to meet certain obligations to release $600 million in public funds toward the planned stadium. The Rays, however, would be responsible for cost overruns beyond its $700 million contribution, and say that delays in the legislative approval of those public bonds introduced additional costs they cannot bear alone.

The city and Pinellas County refused to discuss supplemental funding, particularly in the wake of devastating hurricane damage to the area last year, and insisted they had met their obligations in a ballpark deal originally struck last summer.

As a result, the Rays said they are not proceeding with the ballpark and mixed-use development plan."

The way I read this is: The Tampa Bay Rays had concerns about cost overruns beyond the 700M they were due to pay for the new stadium. The old stadium got hurricane damage, and I guess they wanted the public to pay to repair it. Seems like the city told them no. Now the Rays have de-committed to building the new stadium.

Maybe I'm interpreting it wrong, but it seems like more billionaire cheapskate stuff.

Definitely billionaire cheapskate stuff. But, I think the miscalc is the City/Region don't love the team like that. These owners bank on the Cities/Region being too afraid to let the team go it's starting to back fire more often.

It's still crazy to me that the Rays came into MLB in 1998, they had a sh*tty stadium back then, all I heard was "they'll play there for a few seasons while they get a new stadium" and here we are in 2025, 27 seasons later, and the Rays are still in the same garbage stadium. MLB should have never expanded there and in Colorado. smh.

Not a viable option without an ownership group with a stadium plan. BC Place isn’t even a temporary option after its recent renovation. Nashville, Portland, Salt Lake City, or Charlotte are the options if the Rays leave.
They have two teams playing in minor league ballparks this season. If there was a plan in place, they could make it happen.

SLC's biggest stadium has a capacity of 14K.

Vancouver is a wealthy market with a metro about the size of Charlotte (bigger than the other three).

Maybe it wouldn't work but it should be explored, imo. There is nothing to compete with during the summer and it is BEAUTIFUL there.

And truthfully, support doesn't matter when you compare it to the trash ass ownership of half these teams.

I think it’s gonna very tough for any Canadian cities to get a MLB or NBA team with how high the price to buy or get an expansion in addition to cost of a new building. Also add in the Canadian dollar and not many billionaires/groups that can afford it. That’s why the Expos are likely never coming imo.
