This series has been like an NBA matchup. Each team goes on a big run in each game. There hasn't been a lot of back and forth play, just one team bludgeoning the other at different times.

Game 1 of Stars-Lightning series drew a jarring 2.12 million viewers (on NBC!) Saturday night, per ShowBuzz Daily. That finished fourth among the six live sports contests airing in primetime on Saturday, ahead of just an MLB on Fox national window and a Louisiana Tech-Southern Miss college football game on ESPN2. Game 3 of the Celtics-Heat Eastern Conference Finals on ESPN, Miami-Louisville on ABC, and the NASCAR race from Bristol on NBCSN all topped the NHL on NBC Saturday night.

A lackluster matchup on paper. Two teams most people don't care about, no major stars besides maybe Kucherov (household name types) and he's unlikeable, plus it's the wrong time of year competing with every other major sport.

Are people watching in Canada?

Hockey basically turned into a regional sport a couple decades ago or whenever they left ESPN. They lost a lot of coverage so a whole generation went without caring about other teams besides their market.

Officiating is garbage. Tampa gets every call. Not to say we haven’t gotten completely outplayed. But hard to stick around in games when you’re always on PK and get no benefit.

The NHL hasn't adapted to the times either. There's next to no promotion of the league's superstars in the US and they haven't adjusted the rules enough for more free flowing play. There's still clutching, grabbing and constant cheap shots. The average score (3 goals a game) is the same now as when the Devils ruined the league with the trap zone 25 years ago.

The heyday of the league was the 80s when there was about 4 goals per game. The league should want their superstars like MacKinnon, McDavid, Draisaitl, etc. pushing 150+ points again. That is exciting.

Some of it's coaching because just about everyone is so conservative. It would be a lot more fun if every team in the league was always pushing the pace like Vegas.
